   There are many myths about a great flood. There is mention of a Great flood not only in the Bible but in in the Epic of Gilgamesh, a Babylonian work. The Romans and Greeks had the legend of Deucalion and Pyrrha, who saved their children and animals by floating away in a giant box. Pralaya in Hinduism, the Gun-Yu in Chinese mythology, Bergelmir in Norse mythology, in the arrival of the first inhabitants of Ireland with Cessair in Irish mythology, in the lore of the K’iche’ and Maya peoples in Mesoamerica, the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa tribe of Native Americans in North America, the Muisca, and Cañari Confederation, in South America, Africa, and some Aboriginal tribes in Australia.

“Lord of the Universe, did we not warn You on the Day of Creation that man would prove unworthy of Your world?” God replied:  “But if I destroy man, what will become of My world?” They answered: “We shall inhabit it.” God answered: “Yet upon descending to earth, will you not sin even worse than man?” They pleaded: “Let us dwell there awhile, and we will sanctify Your name!”

The “Sons of God” came down to teach mankind truth and justice; and for three hundred years they did  teach man. From them  Cain’s son Enoch learned all the secrets of Heaven and Earth. Later, however, they lusted after mortal women and defiled themselves by sexual intercourse. Around the tenth generation after creation angels known as “Sons of God” found wives among the lovely Daughters of Men. Their children were known as giants and known as “Nefalim” (Hebrew).   Enoch has wrote about their Divine teachings, but also their fall from from their Heavenly nature. Before the end they were indiscriminately sinning with virgins ,matrons, men, and beasts.

    God allowed them to descend, but they were overcome by lust for Eve’s daughters, Shemhazai begetting from  them monstrous sons named Hiwa and Hiya, each of whom daily ate a thousand camels, a thousand horses and a thousand oxen. Azael  invented jewelry and cosmetics employed by women to lead men astray. God there forewarned them that He would set loose the Upper Waters, and thus destroy all men and beasts. Shemhazai wept bitterly, fearing for his sons who, though tall enough to escape drowning, would starve to death.

   Hiwa dreamed of a huge rock above the earth, like a table-top, and having a legend inscribed on it which an angel scraped off with a knife, leaving only four letters. Hiya also dreamed: of a fruitful orchard, and of other angels felling it until only a single three-branched tree remained. They told their dream to Shemhazai,who replied: “Your dream, Hiya, signifies that God’s Deluge will destroy yall mankind, except Noah and his three sons. Nevertheless, be comforted,for Hiwa’s dream signifies that your fame, at least, will never die: whenever Noah’s descendants hew stones, quarry rocks or haul boats, they will shout,”Hiwa, Hiya!” in your honor.”

    Its know that  Shemhazai repented, and set himself in the southern sky, between Heaven and Earth – head, down, feet up, and hangs there to this day: the constellation called Orion by the Greeks.

  Azael, however, far from repenting, still offers women ornaments and many-colored robes with which to lead men astray.For this reason, on the Day of Atonement, Israel’s sins are heaped on the annual scapegoat; it is then thrown over a cliff to Azazel – as some call Azael.

   Others say that Shemhazai and Azael were seduced by the demon Naamah, Agrat daughter of Mahlat, and Lilith who had once been Adam’s spouse.

  In those days only one virgin, Istahar by name, remained chaste. When the sons of God made lecherous demands upon her, she cried: “First lend me your wings!” They assented and she, flying up to Heaven, took sanctuary at the Throne of God, who transformed her into the constellation Virgo – or, some say, the Pleiades. Some angels  lost their wings, were stranded on earth until, many generations later, they mounted Jacob’s ladder and thus went home again.

   Other  angels asked God’s permission to collect sure proof of man’s iniquity, and thus assure his punishment. When God agreed, they turned themselves into precious stones ,pearls, purple dye, gold and other treasures, which were at once stolen by covetous men. They then took human shape, hoping to teach mankind righteousness. But by taking on human for the made the angels  subject to human lusts and susceptible to being seduced by the Daughters of Men. They found themselves chained to Earth, unable to resume their spiritual shapes.

    The wise and virtuous Enoch also ascended to Heaven, where he became known as the angel “Metatron.” God set His own crown upon Enoch’s head, and gave him seventy-two wings as well as multitudinous eyes. His flesh was transformed into flame, his sinews into fire, his bones into embers, his eyes intotorches, his hair into rays of light, and he was surrounded by storm, whirlwind,thunder and lightning.

   Some sons of God were called by that name because the Divine light out of which God had created their ancestor Samae”l (DONT SAY NAME), Cain’s father, shone from their faces. The Daughters of Men, they say, were the children of Seth, whose father was Adam, not an angel; and their faces therefore resembled our own.

    Later Sons of God were the pious descendants of Seth, and the Daughters of Men sinful descendants of Cain- explaining that when Abel died childless, mankind soon divided into two tribes; namely the Cainites who, apart from Enoch, where wholly evil, and the Sethites who were wholly righteous. These Sethites inhabited a sacred mountain in the far north, near the Cave of Treasure – some take it for Mount Hermon. The Cainites lived apart in a valley to the westward. Adam, on his deathbed, ordered Seth to separate his tribe from the Cainites; and each Sethite patriarch publicly repeated this order, generation after generation. The Sethites were extraordinarily tall, like their ancestor; and by living so close to the Gate of Paradise.

   Genun the Canaanite, son of Lamech the Blind, living in the Land of the Slime Pits, was ruled by Azael from his earliest youth, and invented all sorts of musical instruments. When he played these ,Azael entered into them too, so that they gave forth seductive tunes entrancing the hearts of all listeners. Genun would assemble companies of musicians, who inflamed one another with music until their lust burned bright like fire, and they lay together promiscuously. He also brewed beer, gathered great crowds in taverns, gave them to drink, and taught them to forge irons words and spear-points, with which to do murder at random when they were drunk.

Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel told God that such wickedness had never before flourished on earth. God then sent Raphael to bind Azael hand and foot, heaping jagged rocks over him in the dark Cave of Dudael, where he now abides until the Last Days. Gabriel destroyed the Nifalim by inciting them to civil war. Michael chained Shemhazai and his fellows in other dark caves for seventy generations. Uriel became the messenger of salvation who visited Noah.

All God does is out of His Great love for us. Because of mankind’s wickedness due to the gross materialistic nature of the earth itself. God saw that the pure Divine soul He had imparted to mankind could no longer be connected to the polluted physical body that characterized mankind at this point. As a result, God decided to destroy these physical bodies, out of His love and concern for the needs of souls.

“And God said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the birds of the air; for I repent that I have made them.”

Thats why the name of God here by the flood YHV”H which is that of mercy when this appears as anything but merciful.

The only person called “Tzadik”  (righteous) in Torah was Noach (Gen 6:9) This has got to mean something !

Towards the end of the Parsha is mentioned the Birth of our father Avraham. Avram’s father Terach was a Idol maker only when he was having relations with his wife, Amtelai Bas Karnevo, during her menstrual period, did the Satan agree to let them give birth to the soul of Avraham. He thought that being born under such impure conditions and in such a family, Avraham would fail his task in this world.

The parsha of the flood is read as fall gets into full swing. The mazal of the  month of Cheshvan, when the reading of this parsah occurs much of the time, is the scorpion, known for its cold venom.  The mazal of the month of Cheshvan, the scorpion, is scary. . In the Torah, the scorpion generally appears with the snake, as in the verse that describes the “great and awesome desert” as the place of “snakes, saraph (a type of snake) and scorpion…” The pit into which Joseph was thrown by his brothers is also described as being empty, “containing no water”. Our Sages add that while there was no water in the pit, there certainly were snakes and scorpions.

The flood lasted 40 days and 40 nights. The number forty holds special significance in Torah. The sages tell us the planet Venus takes forty days to retrograde from it’s place as evening star into a position of being the morning star. Interestingly, the pre-embryo of an infant according to the Talmud is said to form in the first forty days. (Talmud Bavli, Yevamot 69b), In the Torah the number forty reminds of us of the forty-year journey of the exodus (Numbers 14:33-34). We should also take notice that Moses fasted and communed with G-d for forty days before receiving the Ten Commandments (Exodus 34:28) and again a second time later in the exodus story (Exodus 34:28). The spies scouted out the land for forty days (Numbers 13:25). David and Solomon ruled for forty years each (2 Samuel 5:4, 1 Kings 2:11; 1 Kings 11:42). Goliath taunted Israel for forty days (1 Samuel 17:16), Egypt is prophesied to lay waste for forty years (Ezekiel 29:11-12), God tells Jonah to warn Nineveh they have forty days to repent or face destruction (Jonah 3:4). God gives the land a period of rest for forty years at a times (Judges 3:11; Judges 5:31; Judges 8:28). During the early kingdom the people of Israel did evil and God gave them an advisory in the Philistines to contend with for forty years (Judges 13:1), A mikvah – the ritual immersion pool, needs a minimum of forty seah of water.

According to the Torah , the Ark was 627 feet long and 104.5 feet wide, with 65,000 square feet of usable room on each floor!  This size makes it one of the largest boats ever built. One of the largest modern oil tankers, the “ARCO ENDEAVOUR,” is 846 feet long and 152 feet wide.

What’s the lesson for us today, there won’t be another flood?.

In the Torah it says “Make for yourself an ark”  In Hebrew the word “Ark” (תבה ) also means “a word.” . So this also alludes to the construction of words that we pray before God. By this we fix the world and make our ark explained the Ba’al Shem Tov, is that Noah was instructed to “go into the ark,” so we must “go into” our words that we pray.

When we translate the dimensions of the ark, as given in the Torah, into their corresponding letters:

• 300 cubits length – ש
• 50 cubits width – נ
• 30 cubits height – ל

We get the three letters that spell לָשֹן , the Hebrew word for tongue and language. This is a beautiful illustration of what we just said above. The words are only the external aspect of speech. The inner aspect is infused into the words by energizing it with all the powers of the soul. To the point where the Divine Presence speaks from one’s throat.

“And the earth was corrupted before Hashem, and the earth was full of violence (chamas – in original Hebrew text).” Rashi says corrupted here refers to sexual transgression. It was because of sexual transgression that Hashem brought the flood, destroying the world. Improper sexual behavior is the opposite of Holiness. Because of this it arrouses the stern judgment of Hashem. This is why Bilam saw to send the gentile women of Midian to go and seduce the Jewish men. By their transgression with the women of Midian Hashem brought a plague killing thousands in Yisrael. The judgement of Hashem was only reversed by Pinchas when he killed Zimri with Cozbi the women of Midian. By this Pinchas was given the ”Brit (covenant) of peace”, Similar to in our parsha as it says ”I will establish my covenant with you and all who enter the ark with you.” The word covenant appears 7 times when God makes his covenant with Noah. these allude to the 7 commandments God gave to Noah and all mankind. Called the Noachite Covenant. they correspond to the 7 colors in the rainbow. which was the sign of the covenant god had made with Noah. It is by the fulfillment of these 7 commandments that are inherent in the nature of man that he comes into harmony with god. these are the 7 laws :

These universal commandments are known as the “the seven laws of Noah”.

These 7 laws include :

1.Do not worship Idols

2.Do not use the Name of God in Vain

3.Do not kill

4.Do not act in a sexually immoral manner

5.Do not steal

6.Do not eat the limb of a living animal-no animal cruelty

7.Establish courts of Justice

These seven laws of the Righteous Gentile are similar to the 613 laws of the Torah for the Jew. They have many different levels of understanding and many details of application. Most aspects of the Torah are included within them. The non Jew can Receive his blessing and dwell in the tents of Shem (which became the heritage of the Hebrew people) or he may find himself with Noah’s son Cham (Ham) instead and Cham castrated his father, he is not a nice guy.

Noah used the Name יהו”ה  in blessing Shem and the Name Elohem”e  in blessing Japheth.

Shem (340)= ( יהו”ה (26 ) +   שד”י   ( 314 .  Noah also says, “ Let יהו”ה  be the God of Shem,” using the Name יהו”ה.The covenant is the Brit, the Brit is the covenant (Brit meilah- circumcision). When a Jew has sexual relations with a gentile, its a mitvah to kill them both. No witness or court is required to pass judgment. As Pinchas killed Zimri. This is so, as this transgression is so detestable before Hashem. For this reason we must stand strong concerning the standards of conversion, against the ”new Judaism’s” of conservative and reformed. (These started in Germany before the Holocaust-flood). Like wise the issue of who is a Jew. We must hold by the truth as stated in the Torah and defined in the Gemore. Not being influenced by political concerns as this is foolishness. Not all the Russians brought to Isreal can be called Jewish for the sake of citizenship or marriage. Only those who can prove their Jewish identity. It is from Noach that the earth became divided. The Jews Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov came from Shem. From Noach’s 2 other sons descends the 70 nations of the world, as listed in the Torah. These 70 Nations correspond to to the 70 names of the Nashamot that descended from Yaakov. The descendents of Cannan are cursed and Shem blessed. Becoming the Nation of Yisrael. Concerning who is jewish we must be truthful and recognize the truth of our tradition which has not changed since receiving the Torah at Sinai which is written in the Torah recorded in the Mishna and clarified in the Gemora. As upon these things the ”brit” (covenant) rests, as we see in our parsha. Transgression against these values leads to utter destruction. We see this from our parsha as it is written ”The earth was sexually corrupted before Elohy”m and the earth was full of chamas (violence)”. In this generation we above all are aware of Chamas (Terrorist group). Hashem must save us, as we must guard the brit . To guard the brit we are as Noach in the ark. Protected from the waters of the flood. The destructive forces aroused by the evil deeds of the generation. God commanded Noah to build the Ark, but Noah still had to build it. One needs to take time, effort and cost making their spiritual ark. To do this one must act as a man of faith.

And not as Nimrod who was a “gilgul” (reincarnated) as Nebuchadnezzar. This is why he built a statue in the Dura valley like Nimrod also did. This statue was around 90 feet high and 9 feet wide (where a cubit is about a foot and a half). As its written :

“ Nebuchadnezzar made a gold statue sixty cubits high and six cubits wide, and builded it in the plain of Dura in the country of Babylonia.” (Daniel 3)

We also learn from our parsha from The Tower of Babel about the power in numbers. When people gather on a project if enough people are involved Heaven looks down, Lets give God something real good to see. This is a call to all men of faith.

Remember the Ark is where the Torah is kept. The ark of the covenant, this is where we want to be. In the future there will be a new ”ark”, which will be our succah. It will be our Succah which will protect us during the war of Gog and Magog. This Succah is made from our Mitzvot. From the noga (sparks of light) we raise up. It will be made from the skin of the Leviyaton. From the shade of this Succah the righteous will be protected from the heat of the sun which will destroy the wicked, and be healing to the righteous. These things as The Rambam says in Hilchot Malachim are hidden and concealed and the way the way they come about is left to be seen with the arrival of our righteous Mashiach quickly in our days1 COMMENT
