A Haitian point of view

Many of the Missionaries are culturally insensitive racists who don’t fit into the United States so regard Haiti as a spiritual sandbox in which to frolic. They see Haiti as “ground zero” of spiritual warfare because Haiti has voodoo. Brazil, Cuba, and other Latin American countries have similar religions. Yet, Haiti is the only one that is poor, black, and a stone’s throw from the United States.

What does he know about Vodoun? Does he realize Haitians would not have won their independence without it? Does he realize that people who practice voodoo also believe in God? Does he realize that voodoo is a spiritual lifeline to Africa – a way of holding onto one’s roots and saying that there is a part of one’s soul that is not European, not American, but African. But no, for this reader, to be saved one must be exactly like him.

Voodoo is the locus of the religion is Africa, the locus of this man’s religion is America. Perhaps Nebraksa, or wherever it is that the money flows from which pays for the scholarships, the meal a day, or whatever other benefit gets one to come to the Protestant churches. Note to readers: I have no problem with Protestant religions, but it is well established that Protestants tend to offer “things” while Catholics mainly offer the comfort of being a part of the majority although that dominance is being eroded. One key difference here – a person can be Catholic and Vodouisant at the same time while a person may not be Protestant and participate in Vodoun.

You can see how he uses a slash to equate Vodoun and Satan together. To him, the two are interchangeable. Someone has been watching way too many movies. Observe how he stereotypes the practitioners of Vodou who counter-protested as “witch doctors”.

He notes that Haitian have mostly nothing. Well, from a very material perspective he is correct. Haitians have very little. My Haitian counterparts, however, have their pride, their families, their faith, and though often frustrated by events out of their control, happiness. Nothing compared to a corvette though.

I was always amazed at how naïve foreigners could be about Haitians religious beliefs. The assumption of some missionaries was that atheism was rife in Haiti. I remember a missionary who stopped his car to ask me what I was doing as I was hiking along a road on the Plateau. I replied that I lived there and asked him what he was doing – he said he had come to “bring the word”. The word was already there, and Haitians are a religious folk. Perhaps they would be effective missionaries for the United States?

ABC: As international aid agencies rush food, water and medicine to Haiti’s earthquake victims, a United States group is sending Bibles.

But these aren’t just any Bibles; they’re solar-powered audible Bibles that can broadcast scriptures in Haitian Creole to 300 people at a time.

The Faith Comes By Hearing organisation says its Bible, called the Proclaimer, delivers “digital quality” and is designed for “poor and illiterate people”.

It says 600 of the devices are already on their way to Haiti.

Woman testifies about cell phone in throat

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – Prosecutors say a man shoved a cell phone down his girlfriend’s throat because he was angry and jealous. But defense attorneys insisted as a trial got underway that the woman swallowed the phone intentionally to keep the defendant from seeing whom she had been calling.
Marlon Brando Gill, 24, is charged with first-degree assault in the December incident involving 25-year-old Melinda Abell. Abell has given inconsistent accounts of what happened before she was taken to a hospital, where an emergency room doctor removed the phone.
She testified Tuesday on the first day of Gill’s trial that she couldn’t remember how the phone got in her throat, saying she had too much to drink that night.
She said in court that she could not recall writing a statement to police after the incident, in which she said: “I think he thought I’d been talking to other guys. … He took my phone to see who I had been calling.”
The statement added: “If I didn’t want him to see my phone, I would have just thrown it out the window and busted it.”
Much of her testimony centered on her relationship with Gill, of Kansas City, which started in 2004.
“It was good at first, then it got rocky,” Abell said.
She testified that he had verbally and physically abused her, but under cross-examination she acknowledged she never told police about the abuse and continued to live with Gill until the cell phone incident.

Man saves dog thrown from window

WARSAW (Reuters) – A man was bruised but alive on Wednesday after a Saint Bernard dog thrown out a two-story window landed on him as he was walking down the street in the southern-Polish city of Sosnowiec.
The 110-pound dog was pushed out of the window by its drunken owner Monday, police said.
“The dog had a soft landing because it fell on a man,” said police spokesman Grzegorz Wierzbicki. “The dog escaped with just a few scratches.”
“The man was also more in a psychological state of shock than physically hurt,” Wierzbicki added.
The one-year-old dog, named Oskar, was placed in an animal shelter while police investigate its owners for animal abuse.

Dog-cooking, tree-taking school-burner may lose job

BEIJING (Reuters) – A Chinese headmaster, who tried to buy off colleagues by cooking dog meat for them after secretly selling off trees around the school, ended up setting fire to classrooms when the meal burst into flames, a Chinese newspaper said Friday.
Ten classrooms containing televisions, computers, printers and textbooks burned down, leaving nearly 100 children unable to go to school, the Beijing Youth Daily said.
The headmaster, in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, sold off a 1,000-tree arboretum surrounding the school on the sly, the newspaper said.
“In order to get the teachers not to tell anyone what he had done, on the afternoon of May 16, headmaster Meng got friends to obtain two dogs, which they proceeded to kill on the school grounds,” the report said.
“He then told the teachers they would have dog meat to eat that afternoon,” it added.
But the plan went awry when the dog being cooked burst into flames and set fire to the school’s main office and then the classrooms.
The local education bureau fined the headmaster 10,000 yuan ($1,252) and suggested he be fired, the newspaper said.
