Encounters with “Asev” — Who is “Edom” secrets of Vayislach

MONET

Vayishlach Bs”d                                                UPDATED DEC 24 2018

THINGS ARE NOT AS THEY APPEAR

Yaakov’s (Jacob’s) bed originally was in the tent of Rachel and upon her death Yaakov brought his bed into the tent of her maidservant Bilhah, seeing her as the link to Rachel. Reuven could not tolerate him choosing Bilhah, a lowly maidservant in his eyes, over Leah the matriarch of the Jewish people, his mother. So he moved Yaakov‘s bed into the tent of his mother Leah. Reuven never actually slept with Bilha, God forbid, That would have been an unpardonable offense – “rather he moved around the bed of his father and Torah considers it as if he had slept with her” as said in Gemore Shabbat.

“Yaakov avinu” spent a total of 36 years in exile from the time he left Yitzhak and Rivkah, his father and mothers house. He spent 14 years at the Yishivah (school) of Shem and Ever, before going to the house of Lavan. At Lavan’s house Yaakov work 14 years for Lavan so he could marry Rachel and Leah. He worked a additional 6 years making his fortune and fathering 11 of his children, as Benyamin was born in the land of Israel. It took him 2 years to travel back to “Aretz Yisrael” (The land of Israel). You can come back to Israel

Rachel died as Yaakov entered “Aretz Yisrael”, as the Torah says its forbidden to be married to 2 sisters at the same time. Concerning this the Ramban says the Holy air of “Aretz Yisrael” would not tolerate Yaakov’s 2nd wife.

Our sages tell us from Barashit (Genesis) we can see many things about the way one should live in this world as is shown there by the examples of our forefathers. In this parsha a point is made by the Holy One, Blessed is His Name to show us that the descendants of Avraham Yitzchak and Yaakov are separate and different from the other nations of the world. In the parsha it is clearly drawn that from Asev comes the people of Edom as it is written ” These are the generations of Asev who is Edom”. “Asev” (Esau), is a reincarnation of Cain. Edom means red, the sages say this describes their blood thirsty nature. Rome descended from Edom. If we spell Rome in Hebrew ”רם“ this has the numerical value of 240 which is the same numerical value as Amalak. Amalak is the countervailing, the opposite force in the world to Yisrael. They are now a transmigratory group of souls whose nature is to hate Jews, the nation of Yisrael and GOD. This would all make much sense since the Zohar tells us that Asev is of the side of defilement. Yisrael on the other hand the Zohar tells us means ”princehood and strength”. The Parsha of Chayei Sarah includes with the chronicles of Ishmael, Toldot concludes with Esau’s marriage to Ishmael’s daughter,  Parsha Vayishlach concludes with the chronicles of Esau. It details Esau’s family line and the leaders and nations that would descend from him, concluding with Magdiel, founder of Rome.

The angel Yaakov wrestled gave him this name Yisrael. The Zohar tells us the angel gave Yaakov this name so that he could prevail over anyone. From this we can learn a lesson as Yaakov faced a conflict here, namely having to fight a Angel. From this conflict came good tidings, as Yaakov received a blessing of power from the Angel. Notice that Yakov asked the angel a question “what is your name”, the angel would not answer. As we know that the angel Yaakov fought was the angel of Asev, the angel associated with evil. It does not like us to ask spiritual questions and prefers that we stay in the “dark”. As when we ask questions we can then grow in the light that the answer reveals. The strategy of the Angel of Asev is to keep us stupid spiritually. It desires us to not even think about God and the eternal life of the soul.  So don’t give in to the angel of Asev but ask spiritual questions grow and learn. While you still can. In Gemore Chulin 91a it says there that Jacob’s thighs were hurt – the right thigh or both thighs is not clear.

When the Holy One puts obstacles in our path we should be joyous since we know that by overcoming these difficulties we will be better off than before. It is by overcoming temptations and turning instead to bring light into the world Yisrael is strengthened. From the parsha we can see ways to overcome these obstacles as when Yaakov was going to meet Asev he split his party into groups so to be able to survive a attack. In Safer Giloya Raza its written that the sages added to the Amida a prayer that our enemies be uprooted and shattered. He says they did this so advise us that we must destroy our enemies, and that to pray against them is not enough. It will not even help, unless we war with them. He also sent Asev gifts and most important he got up at night. At the time which the Zohar speaks concerning saying “when the north wind blows” the breath of Gan Aden (Garden of Eden), Chuchmah the first flash of creative inspiration that guides universal consciousness. It was to this that Yaakov rose so that there he could there evoke a will of GOD that would be most favorable for Yisrael. Such that would enable him to overcome Asev and stop him from wanting to do harm to Yisrael. The time most appropriate for revelation of Chuchmah of secrets is at midnight. The proper way to get comprehension of the Torah is to be occupied in Torah at midnight. This is the main time for learning Torah. As this is a time of favorable will to know secrets of the Torah. Its a Torah party. Rabbi Ashlag teaches from the Zohar that at night the eyes whose light is chuchmah (Divine creative inspiration) are closed, this is because of judgments so they are not able to illuminate because of diminishment of divine flow, so people sleep. Sleep is drawn from the ruling of the burning of Gehenem (Hell), which makes a closing to the Nashama (soul of Divine intellect). These do not dress in the supernal light as it is not enjoined to them. Learning Torah at night and carefully saying the ”Sma” (meditation on Unity of God) will help you rise to be occupied in Torah after midnight. At midnight is given light of the left from Ima divine understanding, specifically Chuchmah from the left of ima. It’s the vowel “shuruk”. This is the power of sight that can open the eyes, but for this light to illuminate it requires chassadim. Which is the force of GOD’s giving. The power which has us do Mitzvot.1 In the Torah its written “Yaakov Avenu sent angels before him to his brother Eisav”. The Midrash brought by Rashi tells us that the Group of angels assaulted Eisav and his men shoving them, the “Malachim” (angels) asked of Eisav’s men, “whose men are you?”, they answered, Eisav’s. They proceeded to beat them. “stop”, the men cried, “Eisav is the son of Yitzchok”. The Malachim paid them no heed. “He is the grandson of Avrohom”, this also produced no letup. Finally they conceded, “He is the brother of Yaakov”. The Malachim replied, “If so, then you are one of ours”. Eisav’s true nature is that of being Yaakov’s other half, working together towards the goal of uniting the world under the banner of “Kavod Shamayim” (The Glory of God). He choses to ignore and cover up his true self,  under many layers. The beating of the Malachim peeled away these layers and revealed his inner self. For that moment, after being stripped to the core, he was aware of of his true self. And the Malachim pronounced upon him the title of being “one of ours”. Some times God forces people into coming into grips with reality, by providence. Yaakov Avenu achieved success in his endeavor. Eisav’s mercy was  aroused. The impact of this encounter is being felt up to this very day.

Yakov’s meeting with Asev in this week’s parsha  teaches us about all confrontations to come with Asev to our present today. The word in the Torah for smite, when Yaakov fears Asev attacking is “והכהו”, Whether we read it forwards or backwards, it is the same word. In  Da’at Chachamim its says this is so as  Every blow, that the gentiles inflict on Am Yisroel, will eventually rebound and hit them back.

It is not easy even for the most beloved of Hashem Yaakov Avinu look what he had to go through he survived living with Lavan for twenty years, fought an entire night with the angel of Eisav, living through a confrontation with Eisav, Yaakov  went to the city called  Shechem and then Shechem son of Chamor (literally, “son of a donkey”) raped Ya’akov’s daughter, Dinah, and kidnapped her. From that crisis came another catastrophe after Levi and Shimon: killed all the men of Shechem , Then Yaakov feared retaliation by all the nations of Canaan. It is not easy even for the most beloved of Hashem Yaakov Avinu so don’t be surprised when facing difficulties just “serve Hashem”. The child conceived by Dinah and Schem  was named Osnot. Osnot ended up, in the house of Potiphar and later married Yosef. From Yosef and Osnot, Menashe and Ephraim were born. The God has ways of doing things we would never come up with , by this know personal and national salvation may only be a moment away !

Aspects of Jacob and Esau are in all of us and they  stand in perpetual battle. Soul against body, the scholar and the warrior – the body’s selfish drives and the soul’s share and transcend. These 2 voices are always pulling us in opposite directions.Should I take  or give to another?  Am I here to serve myself or to serve God or only myself ?

When Esav heard that Yaakov was wealthy, he desired to take possession of his wealth. The lesson is don’t show off, unless you are looking for problems.

In the parsha we see clearly Asev becomes the nation of Edom and Yaakov becomes Yisrael. Asev goes to ”Seir” which the Zohar says refers to a strange God. While Yaakov goes to a place called Succot and then to Kedesh which refers to ”kodesh” (Holiness).

So always Go in the way of KODESH !

ANOTHER “DOUBLE DOSE” PARSHA BAHAR (IN THE MOUNTAIN) AND BUCHUKOTI (IN MY STATUTES)

NEW1UPDATED june 26TH 2019

Bahar                                  בס”ד

The land of Israel belongs to God, we are only tenets on it. The land has its right and rules by which we must live by. Most obvious are the laws of “Smitah” (Sabbath year ) and “Yovel” (Jubilee Years). Engraved on the Liberty Bell, now in Philadelphia is ” Proclaim LIBERTY through all the land to all the inhabitants thereof “. This is a mistranslation of a verse from our parsha. “You will proclaim release throughout the land for all its inhabitants.” THIS REFERS TO EVERYONE RETURNING TO THEIR GOD GIVEN LAND WHICH CAN NOT BE SOLD FOR EVER ! Our parsha begins “and Yhv”h spoke to Moshe in Mount Sinai”. Then there follows instruction from God concerning the smittah (7th) year, laws concerning slaves, laws concerning protecting and providing for the poor and regulations regarding farming the land. The Biblical prohibition on planting and harvesting the land in the 7th year is the earliest recorded record of the much later modern farming  technique of leaving fields uncultivated for a season, called “crop rotation” this allows the soil to restore nutrients.

With the “Smittah” year Jewish people are forced to cease their labors in their field for a year this gives one the time to do hard work for what actually counts God for a whole year. Its like taking a year sabbatical from work.  With more time to devote to spiritual pursuits and increased Torah study. One needs to work God hard to in the “Smittah” year as they depend on Him to provide for their needs in this year more than other years as for the “Smittah” year their sustenance will not be dependent on the the work of their own hands.  This is the connection between Shemittah and Mount Sinai. Through Shemittah, one develops a deeper connection to the Torah of Mount Sinai. So “Smittah” is singled out in Parsha Bahar.

To begin with we must ask why does this part of the Torah begin with the words “In Mount Sinai”?. Wasn’t all the Torah given at Sinai ?. There is a very important lesson to learn here. We could say that all these laws in a sense are “In mount Sinai”. The place of the Chuchmah of God. His creative inspiration. The projection of the voice of the Elohe”m Chyim (Living God). In the middle of our parsha is the law against taking interest. The prophet Isiah says “He has taken interest. Shall he live ?. He shall not live. “ The Sages say this refers to the world to come. This also refers to the aspect of the soul called Chayah . This aspect reveals Chuchmah (creative inspiration). It is because of this aspect that Rashi explains that the wicked are dead while they are still living in this world. While the righteous are alive even when their physical existence ceases. Life is only when one is enlivened by the revelation of the part of their soul called Chayah (living). Which is Divine inspiration. The law forbidding taking interest on a loan is central in our parsha. As its violation in a sense is a violation of the most central basis of the Torah to promote as Rabbi Miller says “ a happy commonwealth”. This happens when all people work together to help one another, not in competition against one another. The rules of jubilee teach us a profound lesson. All Jews are landowners forever. There are no serfs. Each and every Jew alive today has a plot of land that actually belongs to him by birthright. When the laws of jubilee will take effect again the land owned by each Jewish family will return to us. It has always been ours.

In this parsha is also given the law of yovel (50th year). In this year all land returns to its original owner. Rabbi miller explains that this is to prevent homelessness. As each Jew is Given a portion in the land by God. Rabbi Bergstien once said that before a person can approach revelation of Divine thought, have a relationship of love with God. They must first love the creatures He created. They must act in a righteous way in the matters of this world. Rebuke over matters such as this is a major theme of the prophets. As error in these ways destroys the foundation for a relationship with God, God forbid. Isaiah saysWoe to those who join house to house and field to field, they draw close till there is no place (for the poor)” (5:8). Jeremiyah saysFor wicked men are found among my people, they lie in wait as a trap bites. They station an ambush, they catch people. As a cage is full so are their houses full of deceit. They have become great, they have become rich. They have become fat, they have become thick. They also transgress in deeds of wickedness, they don’t plead the cause of the orphan that they should prosper. The judgment of the poor they will not judge ” (5:26) Amos says:Who aspire on the dust of the Earth concerning the head of the poor ” (2:7)the head of the poor” Rashi explains that all their aspiration on the earth is how they will exploit the poor. Michah says “They oppress men” (2:2). Zacharia says ”So said YHVH TSAVAOT saying, execute true judgment and perform loving kindness and mercy, each one of you to his brother. Do not oppress the widow, the orphan, the stranger or the poor man ” (7:9-10) Malachi says ”I will approach you for judgment, and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against those who swore falsely, and also against those who withhold the wages of the day laborers, of the widow and the fatherless, and those who pervert the rights of the stranger, don’t you fear me says YHVH TSAVOAT ” (3:5). These are just a few of their words. The prophets warn us greatly concerning our give and take while in this world. The parsha concludes after giving these economic laws with “You shall not make any idols”. The love of our fellow creatures is basic to act in any other way is as having a strange Go”d. They have made a idol.       One way of observing the Smittah is by buying produce  from the Palestinian Authority and Hamas but this is obviously not a good idea for many reasons. Slightly above it is the solution of importing produce from Europe. This make food more expensive and hurts Israeli farmers. Besides this produce does not have the Holiness of “Shemmitah” produce which is a privileged to eat.

In 1888 a group of the most esteemed European rabbis (and the Chief Rabbi of Jaffa) came up with an innovative idea which has become known as the “heter mechira” (literally: permission to sell). They proposed, that just as on Passover we sell our Hametz to a non-Jew, for the Sabattical year, the entire land of Israel may be sold to a gentile, so that the Jews could work the land. …By the time the next shmita cycle came around in 1895-1896, the rabbinic authorities agreed to permit the sale of the land of Israel for that sabbatical year. The rabbis concluded that reality dictated a need for such action because the people could not observe the laws of shmita in its strict interpetation. In the years of 1910 and 1911, Rav Kook allowed for the sale of the land as well, reaffirming that although it was not ideal, it served an important purpose. …In the years that followed, the decision to sell the land was reevaluated before the arrival of each shmita cycle. Once the State of Israel was established, the Rabbanut (Chief Rabbinate) accepted the sale of the land every year. This achieves a goal of compromise with the requirements of reality while still adhering to the Torah. The problem with this is that the produce of  Another option to maintaining the laws of Smittah is called “Otzer Bait Din” (courts warehouse) this involves turning the farming land over to the Rabbinic court. This way the land is no longer owned by a individual so the produce according to some opinions can be sold by the “bait din” and the produce still retains its “smittah Kidusha”. Not everyone agrees with this way of observing “smittah” either. A great supporter of this solution was the Chazon Ish .

The mitzot of observing Smittah are a unique privilege for those of this generation to those have returned to the new “Yeshuv” settlement of the Holy Land. A problem with “hether mechira” is the produce does not have the Holiness of smittah produce as that only pertains to produce grown on land of Aretz Yisrael owned by a Jew. Another way of observing “smittah” is by Greenhouses & plots separated from the ground. But with these too since the produce is not grown on land of Aretz Yisrael , but in Greenhouses & plots separated from the ground so the produce also not have the Holiness of “Smittah produce”. Take notice the Holiness of “Smittah” produce is unique. Unlike “trumah” one does not have to be a Kohen to eat it. Unlike “kodshim” (sacrifices) one does not have to have purity from death (Red Heafer) to eat it. “Smittah produce” has a unique sanctity !

The problem is the majority of the public is unaware of how to keep the laws of Smittah’s sanctity. Since “Smittah” produce is Holy restrictions apply to it most people are unaware of.

The commandments of the ” Smittah and Yovel ” (sabbatical and Jubilee years) help to generate an equality between the wealthy and the poor: For this it is written  “ The Sabbath of the land will be for you, for eating …..  for you, for your servant and maidservant; for your hired worker and for your resident who dwell with you.” (25:6).. With every 7th year is the relinquishment of ALL DEBTS. We are talking about a different kind of world.  In the Yovel Year land returns to its original ancestral owners family. The primeval division of the land among the tribes. This system prevents homelessness and promotes prosperity. ” Smittah and Yovel ” years  resets  market forces and societal status. The bottom line seems that God took us out of Egypt as slaves and made us free men and he does not want us to make ourselves slaves by economic oppression or do so to others. Torah values are economic values which value a commonwealth of mankind, a loving brother hood. As witnessed by the laws of Smittah and Yovel

The laws of yovel and Smittah are only a Biblical obligation in the land of Israel when the majority of the Jewish people live in the Land of Israel, under their own rule. Today, when many Jews are dispersed throughout the world, the law of Shmitah is observed only as a Rabbinic decree and not because it is a Biblical obligation. In the economic conditions of the modern world farming is a big industry and food grown in Israel is not only consumed locally but much is exported. It would be an economic disaster to follow the strict interpretation of the laws of Shmitah. Another aspect of “smittah” Chyim Vital teaches that the Ar’I teaches that those who say that our present “smittah” (sabbatical period) is the second are in error. You will now understand the mystical reason why we call the seven millennia , which we are presently living in, the 2nd “Smittah” (sabbatical-period). It is because it is the second order of creation after the “Kings of the land of Edom.” Thus, our present sabbatical-period of seven thousand years is not the second “smittah” because it was preceded by another period of seven thousand physical years, but because it follows the spiritual “smittah” of the world of Tohu, the emanation of the seven “smittah” that preceded the present order, that of Tikun. in this respect the earlier authorities erred. They said that if this is the second sabbatical-period, then there must certainly be in the end a total of seven such periods then will be a great “yovel” (Jubilee year year).

The Chatam Sofer says that the “Yovel”  commences upon the completion of forty nine years based upon the Lunar calendar, even if 49 “solar years” (365 days per year) have not yet elapsed.
The Chatam Sofer further points out that had Yisrael entered Eretz Yisrael as originally planned we would have arrived there at exactly the fiftieth “Yovel”  since Creation. The calculation is based upon the fact that Klal Yisrael left Mizraim 2448 years after Creation. The Chatam Sofer was hopeful that the 112th “Yovel”  since creation corresponding to the year 1827 would bring the Schechinah back to Eretz Yisrael. According to the Chatam Sofer’s way of calculating the “Yovel” , the last “Yovel”   passed  in 1973  which was the year of the Yom Kippur War..

The next “Yovel”  according to the Chatam Sofer would be 2022 (5782). May it be with this  Blessed and Sacred Year. Great Expectations with God’s Help will be fulfilled.

However,  According to Rabbi Yehuda in times of “Galut” the “”Yovel” ” is counted differently. When the 2nd Beit Hamikdash was destroyed “Yovel” was changed.
According to this way of calculating the last “Yovel”  Year was 5727 (1967) the year of the Six Day War and Yerushalyim was liberated. This was the 48th “Yovel”  since Ezra in 3416. Based upon this analysis the “Yovel”  Year 49 years later was the year  5776 (2016).

The subject of slavery repels most people. In Parsha Bihar it says ” Both your male slaves, and your female slaves, which you shall have, shall be of the nations that are around you; of them shall you buy male slaves and female slaves.”  The Torah does make know that Freedom is ultimately for those who, unlike the slave whose ear is drilled with an awl, truly desire it. The doorpost here evokes the memory of the doorposts upon which the Israelite’s placed blood on, on the eve of their redemption from Egypt. Here the Slave chooses to reject the opportunity for freedom and he then symbolically steps through the doorpost that ushered him into freedom back into slavery. FREEDOM IS THE ABILITY TO DO GOD’S COMMANDMENTS — ARE OTHERS ARE SLAVES TO THEIR EVIL INCLINATION. That not every slave is entirely ready for freedom is vividly illustrated by the constant  complaining by some Israelite s all they want to do is go back to Egypt and be taken care of, to be slaves. There was a brief emancipation of all slaves in a time of crisis. The Babylonians were at the gates. The slaves were released, apparently to help fight off the enemy. As soon as the crisis was over, the slaves were enslaved again. Jeremiah deplored these developments (Jeremiah 34).  Slavery in the ancient world was a given  reality, much like the employment opportunities today. Given the human propensity to indebtedness stimulated by the economies of the world then and now.

The parsha finishes saying “ You shall keep my Shabot”. Shabot is Time of the revelation of Chuchmah (creative inspiration). Which is the inheritance of those who act in love towards all creatures following the laws of the Torah day in and out till that we reach the day that will be all Shabot with the arrival of our righteous Mashiach quickly in our days.

BS”D Bichukoti

Parshat Bechukotai  contains “The Tochachah,” (warning rebuke) section that vividly describes the horrible calamities in painfully rich detail that will befall the Jewish people if they don’t listen to God and don’t observe His commandments. (Va’Yikra 26:15). Jews are entangled through commandments to God. When Jews insist on independence from God their transgressions bring Torah curses in this world or next or both. Jews who live NOT FOLLOWING TORAH their relationship with GOD LACKS PERSONAL PROVIDENCE they could have. The relationship imposed on us with God by the Torah  is a two-way street.  In “The Tochachah” its written   “I also shall walk unto them with “keri” (randomness)…” . This is because of non observance of the Torah. When that happens, all Hell breaks loose. When Jews got disentangled from God, they became deprived of their Divine protection and became prey to the forces of nature and nations of the world. The admonitions, “The Tochachah,” are the prophecies of future misfortunes that can happen as a result of our sins. What described his is what follows automatically because of disentanglement from the Divine.

. The verses of admonitions called“The Tochachah (are also called curses). Much of them revolve around a mysterious word – “keri” – spelled Quf-Resh-Yud. This word shows up for the first time here, it is repeated seven times, never to be found in the whole of Scriptures (Tanach) again. These are the verses containing this word:

  1. “And if ye walk unto Me keri…” (Lev. 26:21)
  2. “And if in spite of these things ye will not be chastised unto Me, but will walk unto Me keri…” (Lev. 26:23)
  3. “And then will I also walk unto you with keri…” (Lev. 26:24)
  4. “And if ye will not for all this hearken unto Me, but walk unto Me with keri…” (Lev. 26:27)
  5. “And then I will walk unto you with a fury of keri…” (Lev. 26:28)
  6. “And they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquities of their fathers, in their treachery which they committed against Me, and also for having walked unto Me with keri.” (Lev. 26:40)
  7. “I also shall walk unto them with keri…” (Lev. 26:41)

The word “keri” plays the central role in this rebukes, because it is the condition on which the curses are based – “And if ye walk unto Me keri…” Amazingly, the punishment is also summarized with the same word – “I, also shall walk unto them with keri…”

What does this word mean? Rash”i – Rabbi Shlomo Itzhaki  and Rashbam – Rabbi Shmuel Ben Meir, a leading French Tosafist and grandson of Rashi (1085 – c. 1158) – derive the root of this word from the word “kara “– “to happen.” Thus, they translate keri as “casually” or “inconsistently.” According to most commentators, this word connotes casualness, happenstance or randomness. In this understanding, if the nation serves God haphazardly, inconsistently – it is counted as a sin. “If they walk casually with Me,” says God, “I will walk casually with them.Rabbeinu Bachya and the Ohr Hachaim teach that  the word “keri” connotes an erroneous world-view ascribing everything to a blind chance. Being a view of the world, in denial of  Divine Providence.

The “Tochachah,” is very scary, being full of Frightening prophesies of the exile and tragedies that would befall Israel. There is a custom to call no one to the Torah for the reading of the verses containing the (admonitions)  Tochachah,” – the reader of the Torah himself  makes the blessings himself without his name being called.

There is One specific law whose violation is mentioned explicitly in relation to the Tochacha, “Then shall the land make up for its Shabbat years throughout the time that it is desolate and you are in the land of your enemies…It shall observe the rest that it did not observe in your Shabbat years while you were dwelling upon it” (26:34-35). Strangely, it seems that the lack of observance of the relatively remote laws of Shemittah (which occurs only once every seven years) can cause the exile. As the Seforno says, “[The Torah] singles out the laws of Shmittah of the land because failure to keep them causes exile from the land. Our right to remain in the land of Israel depends on the fulfillment of this particular commandment.

Shmittah involves three rules. First, during the seventh year of the cycle, no agricultural work such as planting or plowing may be done. Second, all produce that grows during the seventh year is considered Hefker (ownerless) and may be taken by rich and poor alike, no matter who owns the farm or planted the seeds from which the produce grew. Also, no one is allowed to hoard produce in the usual fashion of harvesting. The third rule is that the seventh year automatically cancels all loans. Borrowers are released from their obligation to pay back, and lenders are forbidden to press the borrowers for their money. The laws of the Smittah, protect the rights of the poor and down trodden upon this our dwelling in the land depends. We also see this in the words of the prophets who give us many rebukes against social injustice as the prophet Isaiah states:

” The wasted city is broken, every house is closed for entering “. (24:10)

Rabbi Kara states this is Jerusalem, formerly the joyous city, it will be called the wasted city. The Radak and Ibn Ezra tell us that most houses shall be deserted. There will be no reason for anyone to enter.

Know. “Svit” produce of the 7th year is uniquely Holy and is meant to be eaten. It is the only food with elevated Holiness, like Trumah but it is permitted for any Jew to eat, and one does not have to eat it in purity like Trumah.

In our parsha called “In my Statutes” we find not “statutes” discussed. These being the Biblical laws which defy human rational explanation, but what we find here are “mispotim” , this is the category of laws involving social regulations. We find laws concerning vows, specifically when one vows a vow to dedicate something to give to Hashem.. Beginning with a person’s valuation, then is discussed vowing a animal, his house or field and finally the parsha and the book of Vayikra (Leviticus), also called “Safer Cohaniam” concludes discussing miser, the tithe of produce and the herd and the parsha ends with the words בהר סיני. The name of last weeks parsha.. Again we see the idea as in last weeks parsha, that the social laws, “mishpotim” are essensial and fundamental thus they are delivered under the title called in “Har Seni” . This being a internal aspect of the Torah.as its written “You shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the Lord.” (Lev 19) , is the essential principle of the Torah. But why in the beginning of our parsha does it say Bichucoti (In my statutes) when “statutes” are not discussed in the parsha. ?In my Statutes” literally alludes to the commandments called “mispotim”. As Rabbi Bergstien once said that one must first express the love of their fellow men before approaching the True love of God. Once this is achieved one can ascend upward through the love of Hashem through the “chukim” (Statutes). Thus in the midst of the statutes are the “mispotim”, as the marrow of the bone is where the blood is produced. This is enough for those who understand. The parsha begins telling us of Blessings for observing Gods Laws and curses for their non observance. The Torah requires from us observance of Its “mishotim” (Social Laws). They being a revelation of love for our fellow creations and proper conduct in society. While the inner aspect involves the expression of love of Hashem , that is expressed by “chukim”. “Chukim” are the major body of laws in safer Cohaniam, where we find laws concerning the service of the Cohaniam in the offering of the Holy Temple.. But in our parsha “Chukim” are not taught but our parsha discusses vows which are of the group of mitzvoth called “mishpotim”.. Vows are fundamental to all, as all depends on honesty. As the Torah is called Torah אמת. Thus we see here that to be in this state of “Har Sini” requires complete honesty. One may think that if they say one thing and do something else it is no big deal but in our parsha we see many curses for one who does not stand by their word. So let us never forget our “obligations” and keep our “word”. The sages say that to not fulfill what one says reflects a lack of honesty. Thus we see how careful one must be with their word. Being in “Har Sini” is being in Truth. To separate from this is to separate from life itself. Thus we see all the curses in the parsha. How much better is it to walk in truth. The Torah itself is called “Truth”.

When we examine the Hebrew text of the verse “Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land.” (Vayikra 26:42) we find that here is the ONLY PLACE IN THE WHOLE TORAH WHERE YAAKOV IS spelled with an additional letter vuv before the final letter. This highly unusual. The God certainly know how to spell so this must allude to something deep.

Rashi on this brings a Midrash (Toras Kohanim 8:6) which notes that there are four other places in the prophets where this spelling is used. The sages explain that these five examples correspond to the five times that Eliyahu’s (Elijah) name is spelled unconventionally without the vuv.

The Midrash further explains that Yaakov “took” the extra letters from Eliyahu as a guarantee,  that Eliyahu would one day herald in the redemption. Hence, the Midrash concludes, the source of the extra letter vuv in Yaakov’s name is the missing letter from Eliyahu’s name.

Yaakvov understood that, given Eliyahu’s mission of peace, we would need the power of the letter vuv. One of the primary grammatical uses of the letter vuv is to joins things together. This alludes to the fact that the greatest guarantee of redemption is creating peace within our communities. This is the most certain way to make sure that Eliyahu returns for the redemption.

Then we can see the words of our parsha fulfilled “ You shall eat the old, and bring forth the old because of the new you bring out” with our righteous Mashiach quickly in our days.

WOW ! – Chanukah

candle

Chanukah בס”ד

Chanukah is about revolution. It is a reminder to stand up against the oppression. Especially when the nations values and politics have overcome the government of the

Jewish people living in the land of Isreal. It is a time to establish a truly Torah government.

The victory of Chanuka requires pride, sacrifice and resolve. You must live its virtues not just talk about them in prayer. They are not a thing of the past they are powers of Chanukah. Compromise is a weakness that victors cannot afford. Freedom is reserved for those who fight for it. Standing up against all the odds is the Macabee way. Standing up for the Divine truth. Chanuka is a time to remember the price of victory. It is not cheap!

We can light all the Chanuka lights that we want but we must remember that the purpose of light is to cancel out darkness. We will never cancel out darkness or defeat evil all the while that we lack the commitment and resolve and the sacrifice necessary to win the day. All our Chanuka lights will be nothing but hollow and empty shells if we fail to remember what it is that they are supposed to really be.

Chanukah is a time of ever increasing light. This is seen and accomplished through the service of Chanukah which includes lighting of the “Menorah”. The main service of Chanukah is the illumination of the darkness of night with the manorah in increasing intensity from 1 to 9 lights including the ”shamash”. It was on the first night of Chanukah the 25th of kislev that Antiocos made the temple into a shrine for idolatry. This was the darkest

moment when the house of GOD became a place unfit for his dwelling .This was the climax of the decent of the Jewish people led by their ”high society” as they slid down to the depth of spiritual depravity being absorbed in the ”upper class” (Greek) values of their day, which was called HELLenism. The enemy may have stimulated the decline of Yisrael from outside yet the real enemy was within, it was ourselves. We allowed non-Torah values to

infect us to the point that a Cohen Gadol (High Priest) was placed in the temple who had values opposite that of the Torah.

The enemy was within but salvation came from without and within as only a small

group of Cohaniem who were living in the hills were able to bring about the

spiritual redemption of our people. Reclaiming the Holy Temple, with the miracle of

the oil, and the physical miraculous victory where our enemies were concurred. On

Chanukah we went from the darkest darkness of our souls, spiritually and physically

captured under the dominion of strangers, yet we came to witness miracles and

salvation. The Greeks deliberately and methodically defiled all the oil in the Temple. They purposefully wanted to stamp out the means for Yisrael to serve God. The existence and discovery of one undefiled cruse – despite the aggressive efforts of the Greeks – was a miracle in and of itself. The Megillat Antiochus tells us that the Hasmonean Kohanim “They found only one cruse of oil which was sealed with the insignia of the Holy Kohen from the time of Samuel the prophet.”

We came to witness oil that burned miraculously. That which had the

physical potential to burn for one day burned for eight. This infinite quality of oil represents the permutation of the

spiritual quality of oil, which from kabalah we learn is ” chuchmah ” (creative inspiration), right into this physical world.

It is known that ”chuchmah” (Divine wisdom-creative power) is above space and time. Thus we see its revelation in this physical world “mamash”. The oil from the Manora allows us to Contemplate the surrounding lights and עליוןרצון (supernal will). We know rabbi Moshe Chym Lazatto says this light comes around every year for those who are there to receive it, blessed are those who reach this time. Now the ”Chuchmah” (Divine Wisdom-creativity) dresses itself in our dedication as Chanukah means dedication. Chanukah being the celebration of our dedication to Holiness, which is during the time of ”chanuc” (dedication) of the alter as described in the Torah in the book of ”Bamidbar” (Numbers), the dedication of the temple by King Salomon, the dedication of the temple by Yehuda Macabbe, and today our personal dedication to the Holy Blessed One NOW.

Our personal dedication to the Torah is the absolute fixing of the present exile of

Edom (the west ), which is rooted in Yavan (greek culture ), which is the

source of the hellinism that Yehuda Macabee rebelled against. Yavon is the same

spelling as Zion, except for missing the letter צ ’sawde”. A sawdeek is represented by

Yosef ha Sadeek. He represents the sefira yesod. As taught by rabbi Shimon bar Yochi yesod is 9th of the sefirot, it is as the 8 Chanukah lights and the ”shamash”. They are paralleled by

the 7 lights of the manorah in the temple, and the bulb where the branches meet. Thus it is said by kindling the

Chanukah manorah the manorah in the Holy Temple is lit. On Chanukah there shines the lights of ס”ג

(light of Divine understanding) to Z’a (source of the Ruach, emotional soul). ס”ג =חנה and יהו”ה (is Z’a)=וכ

together is חנוכה . Every aspect can be lit up by נר (lamps) of chanucah. Thus נר

is gematria of the Yichudim (unifications) of אהי”ה   אלהי”ם    אדנ”י each with יהו”ה = נר.

Rabbi Ashlag teaches that all 25 Parzufim (divine faces of revelation) come down to

Prophets, they being attached to the highest powers.

This all shines on Chanukah. חן (favor) from the revelation of the 8 days of Chanukah is as a Temple offering or ”Brit Mealah” (circucision) which both must wait till the 8th day. We receive זאת (SHECHINAH) Chanukah by the revelation of the oil (Chuhmah) that illuminates making one’s face to Shine. This Shining is חן. This is what one must find in their wife (Shechinah) as said in the end of Gemora Gitten. The כלה (bride) being the Shechinah. This being revealed as the perfection of man. This is the ”Gadlut” (greatness) of Yaakov which is called Yisrael. This is the סלום (ladder) from heaven. This is the ו . In this time of Chanukah ”dedication”, this is accomplished by doing what Yehuda Ha Makaabe stood for rebelling against what Yavan represents which is striving for beauty alone without the discretion or recognition of GOD which, thus the pursuit of beauty becomes completely a reflection of the love of the body, and self love. Thus we see reason for their obsession with sports, the human body the main theme of their visual arts, and there obsession with abstract intellectual thought. All the things have only one end the glorification of one self, this is the ultimate product of the philosophy of the Greeks, but when the letter צ ’sawde’ is added to the word’ Yavan’ (Greek) it becomes Zion. Thus when one adds ’sawde’ representing yesod, the power of making the most complete revelation of GOD out of all things and places. Perfect uprightness ,acting as a sadeek. Then true perfect beauty is realized. So, on Chanukah we need to dedicate to GOD the beauty that which is unique to ourselves as we each have a different face. So our relationship to GOD is a personal thing . It is our personal expression of beauty in Divine service. We see in the writing of our sages so many things called “hadar mitzvahsefira”, which is performing the mitzvah in a way which is more than is required by the letter of the law. This is why Chanukah is called holiday of the Oral Torah. All Yisrael are required to fulfill the 613 commandments of the Torah. Since we don’t have a temple now, may it be rebuilt soon some mitzvot involving temple service and other mitzvot due to our lackings can only be fulfilled by learning about them. All the mitzvot that we do bind us together. This is the fulfillment of the letter of the law but this is not enough, as it says in the Talmud “ if only the letter of the law was fulfilled, no one could exist ”. If one only does the least that is required what kind of love does this express ?.

A mitzvah is a vessel for the love of GOD. A pitcher holds water so has an intrinsic beauty to its form, yet with ornate engravings it becomes something to behold. If this thing is a mitzvah that has become beautified it is truly something to love. Each person needs to express themselves with in the mitzvot with the uniqueness of their Nashama, this is to discover ourselves, and GOD’s great source of light within each of us.

It is a time to manifest עזותהקושה (brazenness of Holiness) against the “sitra achra” (other side). By this is the perfection of the mitzvot. It is by this that we become Holy, which means separate. Each of us establishing our own personal relationship with GOD. As it say in Leviticus ”sanctify yourselves and be holy ”. This being sanctification in the permitted or separation. Such as cutting the bread slightly before blessing or doing a ”Tynet debor” (fast of speech). Not speaking is equal to many fasts of food. It is the uniqueness of the individual that makes the ultimate fixing for the creation. It is this individuality that is the complete fixing against the exile of Edom. As they want conformity, a lack of individuality , every one to conform to a certain standardization. As taught by Rabbi Kahana in Pesicta Edom the offspring of Yavan (Greek values) tries to push Yisrael off the Torah path to conform to its values ” be like every one else ”. The perfection of the commandments defeats the darkness of exile. It is this dedication that is required. Now lets look specifically at how the klipa (evil) of Yavan Edom attacks.

In the era of Chanukah the Greeks made laws forbidding observance the Rosh Chodesh (new moon), Shabot ,and circumcision . Chodesh being sanctification in time, Shabot being sanctification in spirituality through action, and circumcision sanctification in the most physical our bodies. It is these institutions that Yavan chose to strike at as they are at the root of our service to GOD. by observance of rosh chodesh we make known our time belongs to GOD. With shabbot we realize the spiritual impact of our actions which we might have thought were in consequential, such as turning on a light. While the circumcision Yavan fought against actually represents the sanctification of GOD with our bodies. That the most physical things we are involved in should be dedicated to divine will.

It’s said by Rashi that Yaakov went back across the river to pick up the small bottles that were filled with oil for Chanukah that he had left there. This oil was oil made from the olives of the olive branch brought back to Noah by the dove after the flood. It was when doing this that Yaakov came across the supernal angel of Edom (the west ), and he wrestled with him and won at Bait Ael which illudes to the place of the Holy temple. This shows us by the power of Chanukah we can concur the exile of Edom. As yaakov did fulfilling the verse “ I will punish the Hosts on high “. The threat of Yaakov getting the Chanukah oil was enough to arouse the angel of Asev, Edom to attack him.

Sni luchot ha brit teaches that on Chanukah if one lights the Manorah outside His door and a spark flies to the street burning hay on a wagon. The owner of the Manorah is not liable to damages. It is the function of the Jewish people to destroy the decendents of Asev. The sparks flying out into the public domain do this. But such is only permitted in its proper time, sparks flying into the street and damaging not on “chanukah” is a crime and one must then pay damages. Hastening the redemption led to the premature death of 20,000 of the tribe of Efriam, when they left Egypt early.

Another matter we need to look at is what it means to us that on Chanukah that Asev can only be defeated when Yosef is with Yehuda. Yehuda alone cannot defeat Asev. This brings us to explain Masiach ben Yosef and David. Yuhudah is the fulfillment of the letter of the law. Yosef is service of a personal nature, above that which is required. The god of the Greeks was a impersonal unreachable god. To them god was the unapproachable authority. By the service of Yosef one fulfills the words of the Torah ”I shall dwell in your midst ” . This is how Yavan the exile of Edom is defeated. One must fulfill the mitzvot regularly this is Yehuda, but not only this but in a beautiful way by this we will overcome the present exile. We see the blending of these two aspects in the mitzvah of the Chanukah manora. As almost every one in Isreal fulfills the letter of the law of this mitzvah, being the aspect of Yehuda, yet in many homes even of those who claim to not be religious we find more than one manora lit this being the ”hadar” above the letter of the law being the aspect of Yosef.

In the Chanukah story the enemy of the Jews were not only the Greeks – but the ”reform” Jews who betrayed the Torah, abandoned the Commandments and accepted Greek ways. This was an internal national struggle for the soul of the Jew – the two sides were the ”Sages” and “Hellenists.”. The true story of the Festival of Light is one of a particularly bloody Jewish civil war.As a matter of fact, civil war continued in Judea for twenty years after the first Chanukah. Hanukkah is a festival built upon a mound of suppressed memories and censored texts, a putative celebration of light that in fact commemorates a Jewish civil war.

The true fight on Chanukah is about. Between Jews and Greeks? No, it was a civil war between Jews and Jews! So that’s the primary thing. Mattatiyahu Maccabe started the war by killing a Jewish traitor and a Greek official present. What was his sin? He made a sacrifice according to Greek customs. Then Mattatyahu turned to the crowd and announces: “Follow me, all of you who are for God’s law and stand by the covenant.” (1 Maccabees 2:27)

The Hanukkah story is really about a revolt against the Hellenized Jews who had fallen madly in love with the sophisticated, globalizing superculture of their day. The Apocrypha’s texts make it clear that the battle against Hellenization was in fact a civil war among the Jews themselves. Here is how the first Book of the Maccabees describes Jerusalem on the eve of civil war and revolt in the time of Antiochus :

At that time there were some evil-doers in Israel who tried to win popularity for a policy of integration with the surrounding nations. It was because the Jews had kept themselves aloof for so long, they claimed, that so many hardships had befallen them. They acquired a following and applied to Antiochus, who authorized them to introduce the Greek way of life. They built a Greek gymnasium in Jerusalem and even had themselves uncircumcised.

Uncircumcision was the price of admission to the Jerusalem gym ! Josephus, tells us, in “History of the Jews”, that one of the most popular plastic surgery operations, in Jerusalem, at that time was replacing the foreskin because Jewish men were embarrassed not to have a foreskin for the race. So, Josephus says that a lot of doctors got rich putting back the foreskins. It was a Jewish problem at Chanukah. Not Jews and non-Jews. The problem was Jews who wanted to adopt a Greek way of life. We don’t have a problem with Greeks adopting a Greek way of life.

Only when the Greeks saw that many Jews were prepared to betray their way of life, did Antiochus find the courage to prohibit ”on pain of death,” the study of Torah, the practice of Circumcision, the observance of Shabbat and Divine worship, and the rest of his injunctions against Torah observance. Then he put a statue of Zeus in the Temple and sacrificed pig on the altar.

Jason’s time as High Priest was brought to an abrupt end in 172 BCE when he sent Menelaus, the brother of Simon the Benjaminite, to deliver money to Antiochus. Menelaus took this opportunity to ”outbid” Jason for the priesthood, resulting in Antiochus confirming Menelaus as the High Priest. Although during the three years As High Priest Jason had given many proofs of his attachment to the Hellenistic party (by building a gymnasium in Jerusalem and by introducing many Greek customs) the zealous Hellenists of the stamp of the Tobiads plotted his overthrow, suspecting him of partiality to traditional Judaism. At their head stood Menelaus.

Hasmonean Dynasty ruled from 142-63 BCE During that time, there was a great deal of tension between the Hasmoneans and the sages. As a result, the sages were not particularly interested in maintaining a holiday that commemorated the dedication declared by the Hasmonean family. There is not 1 Mishna on Chanukah.

Sadducees represented the aristocratic group of the Hasmonean High Priests, who replaced the previous High Priestly lineage. The earlier Priestly lineage had been blamed for allowing the Syrian Emperor Antiochus IV Epiphanes to desecrate the Temple of Jerusalem with idolatrous sacrifices and to martyr monotheistic Jews.

Jewish priest Mattatiyahu led the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire (167 BC-160 BC) and is acclaimed as one of the greatest warriors in Jewish history alongside Joshua, Gideon and David. Led by Mattatiyahu Jews entered Jerusalem and purified the Temple (164 BCE), these events are commemorated each year by the festival of Hannuka.

Jose ben Joezer was a rabbi of the early Maccabean period 191 BCE, a disciple of Antigonus of Soko and member of the ascetic group known as the Chasidim. Yose belonged to the party of the Ḥasidim, and was a decided adversary of Hellenism. One of Yosi’s ideas was: Let your house be a meeting place for the wise; sit in the dust of their feet; and drink in their words with thirst (Avot 1:4). He belonged to a priestly family. Jose ben Johanan of Jerusalem was his colleague. ) was Nasi (president) of the Sanhedrin in the second century BCE. He was a native of Jerusalem. He and Jose ben Joezer were the successors and, it is said, the disciples of Antigonus of Sokho and the two together formed the first of a series of pairs that transmitted the traditional law; in each pair one, according to tradition, was a prince and a president (“nasi”), and the other vice-president, of the Sanhedrin (Av Beth Din)begins the period known in Jewish history as that of the zugot (pairs), which ended with Hillel and Shammai. According to an old tradition, the member of the “zugot” mentioned first occupied the office of Nasi (president) of the Sanhedrin, while the one mentioned second served in the capacity of vice-president.

The Syrian general Bacchides had Yosi ben Joezer placed on a horse to be hanged. His nephew, an important Hellenist, came to taunt his uncle.

The first pair consisted of Yose ben Yo’ezer as Nasi, and Yose ben Yochanan as the Av Beis Din. They received the Oral Law from Antigonos, as did their contemporary Yochanan, whose son Mattisyahu started the Hasmonean revolt. The famous “Yehudah HaMaccabee” (Judah the Maccabee) from the story of Chanukah was Mattisyahu’s son.

Jonathan Apphus, High priest 153-143 BCE. Yonathan Maccabee was leader of the Hasmonean Dynasty of Judea from 161 to 143 BCE. He is called also Apphus

Mattisyahu called for a revolt against the Greeks and Jews who had placed idols in the Temple.

Yuhudah Maccabee removed the idols from the Temple. In 140 B.C. The Hasmonean Dynasty began under the leadership of Simon Maccabee, who served as ruler, high priest, and commander in chief. Simon, who was assassinated a few years later, formalized what Yudah had begun, the establishment of a theocracy ruled by a Kohen Gadol, something not found in the Torah

After the Hellenists killed Yosi ben Joezer the new Nasi became Yehoshua ben Perachyah and the Av Beis Din Nittai haArbeli they were the next of the pairs. According to Rambam, one of the other great Sages who transmitted the Oral Law during this generation was Yochanan, son of Shimon—who was one of the four brothers of Yehudah , known as the Maccabee. Judah and his brothers led the military revolt against the Greeks and Hellenized Jews that led to the miracles of Chanukah.

The third generation of “pairs” consisted of the Nasi Yehudah ben Tabbai and the Av Beis Din Shimon ben Shetach. Shimon ben Shetach defied the evil King Alexander Yannai, ensuring the survival of Torah.

Alexander Yannai was a King from the Hasmonean line. One of the sad postscripts of the Chanukah story is that although the sons of Mattisyahu were Kohanim (Priests, from the tribe of Levi), they took it upon themselves to rule over Israel following their successful revolt. This was a tragic error, because the right to be King of Israel was granted by God to the descendants of King David, who is from the tribe of Yehudah, for eternity.

During the following generations, the Hasmonean leaders were corrupted by their power, both taking upon themselves the title of “King” and also acting with increasing hostility toward the Torah Sages. Alexander Yannai was influenced by an evil advisor to have the Sages killed—but his wife, Shlomis Alexandra, ensured that her brother Shimon ben Shetach was spared.

Hasmonean dynasty ruled Between c. 140 and c. 116 BCE,

Yehoshua ben Perachyah and his colleague Nittai of Arbela were the second of the five pairs (Zugot) of scholars who received and transmitted Jewish tradition (Avot i.6; Haggigah 16a).

After the Hellenists killed Yosi ben Yoeser, Yehoshua b. Perachya became the Nasi in the year 140 At the time of the persecution of the Pharisees by John Hyrcanus (c. 134-104 BC), Joshua was deposed — a disgrace to which his words in Men. 109b apparently allude. However in Sanhedrin 107b and Sotah 47a it was during the persecutions of Pharisees 88-76 BCE by Alexander Jannaeus, not John Hyrcanus whose persecution he fled. He fled to Alexandria, Egypt, but was recalled to Jerusalem when the persecutions ceased and the Pharisees again triumphed over the Sadducees (Sotah 47a).

The Pharisees opposed the wars of expansion of the Hasmoneans and the forced conversions of the Idumeans. The political rift between them became wider when Pharisees demanded that the Hasmonean king Alexander Jannaeus choose between being king and being High Priest. In response, the king openly sided with the Sadducees by adopting their rites in the Temple. His actions caused a riot in the Temple and led to a brief civil war that ended with a bloody repression of the Pharisees. The split came through a tragic event in the Beth Hamikdosh during Succoth.

Yannai, as Kohen Gadol (High Priest), conducted the Service in the Beth Hamikdosh. One of the special services on Succoth was the “Nisuch Hamayim” (Pouring of the Water) on the Altar. According to tradition, together with the pouring of wine which took place during the whole year, a pitcher of water, which had been joyfully drawn from the Spring of Shiloah, was additionally poured over the Altar on each day of Succoth.

This service was, connected with the ceremony of the Drawing of the Water, known as ”Simchath Beth Hashoevah,” and was an annual event during Succoth, which was carried out with great celebration.

When the High Priest was handed the pitcher of water to pour over the Altar, he poured it out on the ground instead, as the Sadducees bad refused to accept this tradition.

Seeing what he had done, the assembled worshippers in the Beth Hamikdosh were infuriated, and began showering him with their Ethrogim.

King Yannai became so frightened at such open rebellion, that he ordered his non-Jewish soldiers to attack the people. This they did, killing six thousand Jews in the court of the Beth Hamikdosh.

After this happening, the people began to hate King Yannai more than ever. There were many uprisings against the King, and he mercilessly crushed the rebels with the help of his paid army. This, in turn, led to further rebellion and bitterness among the people, resulting in six years of bloody civil warfare.

At his deathbed, King Yannai called for a reconciliation between the two parties. Alexander was succeeded by his widow, Salome Alexandra, whose brother was Shimon ben Shetach, a leading Pharisee. Upon her death her elder son, Hyrcanus, sought Pharisee support, and her younger son, Aristobulus, sought the support of the Sadducees. The conflict between Hyrcanus and Aristobulus culminated in a civil war that ended when the Roman general Pompey captured Jerusalem in 63 BCE and inaugurated the Roman period of Jewish history.

TO PROSPERITY AND A BETTER LIFE

CHAPTER 1

WHAT WILL GOD DO, WITH ME ?

The first thing is you need to know, recognize and see  is that you are not alone, ever. If one does not believe and know that God manifests in his own life and its providence. How can he have faith in the fact that God is involved in all that happens everywhere. Every day we encounter signs that point to an active Presence of Spirit. Everything that happens inside and outside of us is brimming with spiritual meaning, points of connection with Spirit. You need to find holiness in everyday life. By this also one may experience the mystical moment. One may see it or hear it, grasp it. Yet it has no form and is unseen and unheard being elusive and evasive. God presents Himself as the undefinable oneness. A glimpse of the Divine is every where. Seeing the patterns emerging in life awakens us. There is meaning in what happens to us in nature and the cosmos. In those things others see only as chance or strange coincidence.  . Although they have a subtle yet undeniable and uncanny quality. Here God reveals himself and then at once is concealed.Unfortunately most people don’t have a clue what’s going on. God is always trying to make contact but they can’t perceive this. The whole universe is there to support our spiritual awareness. The universe is saturated with purpose and meaning. Our universe is directed by a powerful, creative intelligence, and an ordering principle of truly astonishing power, complexity, and beauty. God can be observed in the constant regularity of the universe. We can see this wonder when looking at modern science concerning the wondrous exacting complexity at the atomic and cellular level. To the wonders of the movements of the stars planets and constellations. In these things also is evidence of the subtle truth of the Divine in Creation, of God. One of the great expressions of God is the natural flow of energy transformation in the universe. You need to realize the constancy and patterns occurring in your own life, as found in the deep nature of the universe. Awareness of this leads to recognition of one’s own immutable spiritual nature. God is behind all phenomena. Everything in the universe is directed by his ”laws of nature”. Just as our own breath.Violation of this law leads to disaster. Try stop breathing for a while. Adherence to the law is blessing, by it we remain in harmony with God and his universe. The highway to elevated consciousness exists in recognizing the sacred in everyday life. It is a process of continually practicing self-awareness, paying greater attention to the contents of everyday experiences: sensations, thoughts and feelings. The awareness of our inner and outer lives. The human psyche and the cosmic psyche (soul) are entwined and expressed through patterns that are neither imagined nor directed by us, but rather guided by the mysterious force some call God. With this awareness comes freedom and responsibility. Know that the whole activity of nature is to make one aware of their soul, and its Divine nature. The goal is to manifest this divinity within. This can be done by work (as acts of kindness and other spiritual actions), developing spiritual powers such as the ability to pray, and by learning reading Divine knowledge. One continuously forms destiny. Each stage of life is the root of the next.

When you can see that God is there, everywhere. It makes it alot easier to rely upon his help, to ask for it. To know that he will come through for you. God sees and knows all. It can become as clear, as you know that your own father would do everything in his power to save your life. You will come to see that God is right there with you and will not fail you. You should know that a basic privilege that everyone has is a right to be successful. No matter who they are, where they find themselves, and to where they have fallen. They just must find the right thing to do from deep inside their heart, and go for it. The creator has placed our destiny and highest vison in the recesses of our years, you just need to discover it. But don’t come to think that just because God will help you it will be easy to accomplish your desires. You will still need to take up whatever idea it is that you want God to work with you upon and make this your life. Think upon it, dream of it, live on your idea. This is the art of certian victory, Know that this is the way to success, and this is the way that has produced people with great accomplishments. If what you desire to accomplish is for your good God then will help you succeed. Each person has gone through a certain amount of a “wild goose chase” trying to reach for things that are not theirs to take. God sometimes needs to modify our plans. Doors are opened and closed for our benefit. If something seems to be lacking, this is from God, and there are reasons for it. When you find yourself accomplishing your desired goal this will bring you to real trust in God. Then nothing can take it away. What ever your doing if God is with you you will succeed. God always wins. You just need to push forward. Chase after that which is your goal. If the way seems blocked towards your goal know that the peel comes before the fruit. They can be part of the process of growth itself that well lead you to what you want to achieve. These obstacles many times are only a vessel by which your success will mature through. The obstacles you face are really energy blocks that you can channel positively for personal enlightenment and achievment. Don’t give up and quit prematurely and then you will succeed in accomplishing your goal. You want help from on high. Ask God for help.  It begins by recognizing His Presence. In earlier generations there was no doubt. There were many  revealed miracles and prophets. In general, the later generations are run from a policy of concealment. Even if this whole world is created in a way which the Divine Presence, and knowledge of the existence of God is miraculously concealed. Miracles happen for people who know of both worlds. If you have doubts, you need more knowledge. Don’t misconstrue God’s ability with you. Don’t create obstacles between you and the truth. What ever you assume responsibility for you will be awarded power to deal with it. One person can even save the world, it has happened many times. To succeed you need to be strong, fortified, and triumphant in all the places that it is necessary to fight. Even if you have help from on high. Nothing good comes easy. So be a worrier for good.  But, do not be afraid to hold back or withdraw from a impossible position. Take your stand on ground where you cannot lose, position yourself so that you will succeed. Go along with good advice when it comes like following a current. There are 3 avenues of opportunity that of events trends and conditions. When opportunities happen through events respond actively to these opportunities, be smart. Act boldly when a trend comes to bring you benefit. Success comes from taking advantage of opportunities. Take advantage of the structure and momentum of situations. Then there will not happen to you the unexpected. But, be prepared anyway for the unexpected. Plan for difficulty in times of ease. Give thought to what is near at hand and conder that which is remote. If you dont concider that which is remote you will have trouble near at hand. Do the Great while it is still small. Just do your part and God will put the finishing touches on it, customize it, and take it all upstairs to complete the job. What ever it may be. Every single second the entire order of the worlds is changing. Presenting times of opportunity, to harmonize with the coming changes. Know natures timing. They rotate, orbit, and move in totally new paths, never known from genesis. They create fresh combinations, interactions, and interrelationships find what you have to do and go for it now. Do not think you can live on past virtues. There is no time like now. Be careful how you spend each day. You need to cultivate endurance. There is no time to be hesitant or indecisive. Of all the avenues of seeing success none is greater than in the unexpected. There is no room in success for procrastination.

One must fight with all their strength to enter into the secret of the God. What is it that you do? This is what you are. Accordingly this is what you will receive now or latter. What you do will come back to you. There is no doubt concerning this. The only questions are when, and how will these things effect your body and your life here, and your soul which is eternal. A good deed brings one result, and a bad deed another. Kindness will invite kindness from heaven which supports and protects. The Holy is by our hands and in our deeds. Always be gentle. This shows a level of refinement of your soul. Acts of exceptional wickedness and goodness bear fruit in this life. Plan to deal with difficulty when it is not so hard, do the great when it is still small. Deal with difficulties while they are still easy. Don’t wait for them to become a major problem. God sometimes sends us problems as a wakeup call. One who is aware may not have to be reminded from above. If one ignores God’s messages, He may need to send you “louder” messages. These being even more difficult situations. So don’t ignore these messages. Don’t create self created problems, misery or disaster. Many times the “problem” is only the way we look at things, as there is a completely different perspective. The one which is correct. Its better to avoid unnecessary problems in our lives. Know that every vicious thought will rebound. So avoid thoughts of hatred and jealousy. Blaming others does not bring your goals closer. Ignore the vicious  competition among people. They will one day come back to you with tremendous power. Once you set them in motion you will have to bear their fruit. Remember this and avoid much evil. Do not confuse evil for good. Misery that has not yet come is best avoided. Blaming statements can become self fulfilling prophesies of failure. The main thing is to work on those things that will bear fruit in the future, towards this end all our forces should be directed. Every one has heard the expression ”be careful what you ask for you may get it”. When calling out to God if you are persistent you will be answered, but the results may be different than you anticipated. Especially if you are not doing what is expected of you or worse doing the opposite. It does not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expects from us. If you call out to draw God’s attention you will find it. Man brings upon himself what ever befalls him. Harm does not originate from God who is the source of all good. You need to accept that God really knows what He is doing in your life. Many times when we fall by misfortune this is only so that we can come to some thing better. Know, descent is for the sake of ascent. The husk precedes the fruit. The bigger the ascent one must come to, the bigger the descent that must precede it. So don’t obsess on the past and dwindle away by it,  use it as a springboard to achieve. Its up to you to turn each affliction and all its bits of suffering into fruitful stepping stones to blossom, flourish, and grow into new levels. Whatever the situation capitalize on it. Its like finding the treasure at the end of the rainbow. Go for it, and if you do not give up you will find it..

Work not in competition against your fellow but towards social cohesion amongst those near  you, your nation and all men. One must be in pursuit of a oneness with their humanity this is the first step in spirituality. Only a good person will be accepted to the inner chambers before God. The Divine Presence dwells only with the righteous. There are those who seemingly countless times they make schedules, agendas, itineraries accompanied with strong resolutions, decisions, and pledges to finally fulfill them – to no avail. Dont be as these, be reliable. At least make yourself like a person with whom you would be happy to befriend and associate with. When radiant joy and love emerge they are contagious. People like to keep in the company of such people. When looking at another person find and focus upon the good within them. A Divine thought is an action. Becareful to not misjudge people. So if you need to judge others do so in a scale of merit. This can actually arouse the good that was hidden within them. This is true even before the supernal court. So look at each person to see their good. Don’t embarrass people or bring them to shame.  Know each person in the world in a way is like a limb of one’s own body. So in a sense we are all responsible for one another, and even more the welfare of another in some way effects our own. So be supportive of people helping them with positive purposes with what ever they need. Don’t think about only what you want all the time. There are other people in the world besides yourself, and they need you. How would the body function if the heart decided it did not want to share its blood with the liver. realize that all are one. All the souls are collectively one supernal organism and giving to someone else is tantamount to giving to oneself. One has to nullify their own needs

Here is some of the first chapter of the Book. There is also a  introduction for beginners.

PARZUFIM

General Parzufim

There are 5 parzufim of Atzilut. Each contains 5 parzufim. Each has 613 parts and is in the image of man.1 These parts include 248 limbs and 365 sinews. Each parzuf has 7 ”Hachalot” (palaces). Each and every parzuf of A”k, Atzilut Bria Yetzera and Asiyah includes the parzufim called : Brain, Bone, Sinews, skin and  parzuf Flesh. 2 The 11 spices of incense correspond to 11 gaps between the parzufim. Rabbi Yakov Abuchitzera teaches that there are 11 main sparks, curses, and spices in the incense and they correspond to Abba, imma, Yisrael Saba, Tevunah and the 7 sefirot of Zu’n of Bria Yetzera and Asyiah.3 11 sefirot are 11 aspects of the kings who died. They are 7 from Zu”n and 4 from the back of Abba Imma and Yesoit.4 Rabbi Shalom Sharabi teaches מ”החדש went out to make tikun of All the parzufim of Atzilut cleansing Atzilut of Nikudot. Making klipa Noga of Atzilut (real soul food-מ”החדש made and makes the sparks rise) being The Nashama and its life force. Making Klipot Nogah of Bria of Good and Evil. So to in Yetzera and Asiyah. Purifying the 7 kings that died. They being ו”ה =11. As the “kidusha” in the klipa is devided into 11 aspects. These are 10 sefirot “penimi”, Being the Nashamot and the life force in them, And one “makiff ” upon them. Parralel to these are the 11 spice of Incense.5 All 10 of the sefirot is a complete parzuf except Teferet Dat and Yesod. Each of these includes 2 parzufim. So 9 sefirot are 12 parzufim. (Bina, Chuchmah, Dat-2 Chesed,Givurah,Teferet-2,Netzauch,Hod,Yesod-2) 6 There multiplies on the face of the earth 12 פנים (faces), 12 Holy parzufim to the Nashamot.7 Each parzuf is made of all 5 making a total of 25 parzufim.8 Each of these 25 pazufim is made of 5 parzufim making a total of 125.9 All Parzufim of Bria, Yetzera and Asiyah go out of Zu’n of Atzilut.10 The 5 parzufim in Bria are as in Atzilut except Arich and Abba of Bria have only 6 corners, but Imma in Bria is a complete parzuf of 10 sefirot, She has only one ”makiff”. Z”a of Bria has 2 ”makiff”. In Yetzera Arich and Abba are in the aspect of only 3 sefirot on 3 sefirot . Imma, Teferet and Malchut of Yetzera each have only 6 corners. Imma of Yetzera has no “makiff”, Tereret has one ”makiff, and Nakavah has 2. In Asiyah Abba is only a small point, but Arich is 3 sefirot included in 3 as the rest of the sefirot of Asiyah except Abba. This is becouse in Asiyah Arich is the middle pillar.11 All the parzufim must be refined as they are made of vessels and sparks of the 7 kings of ”Olam Nikudim” that shattered to 320 aspects.  Atzilut is shut in the “reshimu”. The world is according to vessels and not lights. From Yesod is the aspect of the body, inside is the soul. A”k of Atzilut, Bria, Yetzera and Asiyah is the tip of the י of 4 יהו “ ה.12 There are names of יהו “ ה in Binna, Z’a and Nakavah. They are drawn from אלהי “ ם . Every יהו “ ה is the aspect of eyes. This is the idea of round letters.13 After tikun the source of ב “ ן is in Nakavah of A”k. From the Yesod of A”k goes a drop of “mym duchrin”, which is the secret of the name מ “ ה . מ”ה is the Yesod of “duchrah”. מ”ה goes out of the forehead of A”k. This is the idea of dominance of the Nashama.14 The Shomer Emunim, R. Argosi teaches that the essence of Godliness is תפשו (simple) It is not separated from Atzilut, as it is not divided.into portions. The Keter of A”k is אחדותפשות (simple unity). It has no relationship with any Divine names written in the Torah. Out of it unfolds a multitude of aspects. Keter of A”k is a vessel of Ayn Sof. It is as the parchment of the Torah is written on before any letters are inscribed. A”k is before all eminations. From the 10 sefirot of A”k are eminated 10 sefirot of Atzilut. The sefirot of A”k and Atzilut are all renewed completely. Its as lighting one candle as another. ”kav Yosher” dresses in A”K. Light decends from A”k to Atzilut. There is a portion of Ayn Soff in A”k and not by ”histosholut” (gadual unfolding), but only the Ayn Soff has power to create “yash-miAyin”. The Ayn Soff renews Atzilut, but to the Ayn Soff there is no changes or renewal. Ayn Sof is רצון (will). A”k does have the aspect of vessels but they are of very fine light. With A”k is no aspect of ”Zachor” or ”Nakavah”. Also with Atik of Atzilut is no ”Zachor” and ”Nakavah” only face and back. Keter of Arich is Zachor, Chuchmah of Arich is Nakavah. Zachor and Nakavah do find their source in ע“ב Chuchmah and ס“ג Binna of A”k. These give birth to מ ” ה of A”k. The ”penimi” and “Atzmut” of A”k we do not have permission of discuss or to be occupied in. Only what He eminates flowing through wholes and windows. These being the Ears , Eyes, nose, mouth and other parts of the head of A”k. In Ayn Soff and A”k there is no form at all. The Vessels of Atzilut have no limit or Measure, not a physical one. Their only restrictions are according to intellect. Before there was eminated A’”k there was Nothing. There was no aspect of זמן (time). The sefirot of Atzilut are above ”sedar Zamanim” (order of times). The sefirot themselves do not have the Existance of time ”mammash”. Ketter is The Torah before creation of the world. This is Z”a. The 2000 years before creation are Abba and Imma.15 From Yosher of A”k went our many lights going out from the ears, nose, mouth. Lights of the mouth of A”k are called “olam Akudim” (Malchut A”k). These are the lights of “yosher” alone, they do not have a aspect of “Iggulim”. There are lights from the eyes of A”k called “Akudim” these do have aspects of “Yosher” and “Iggulim”. These lights stand from the back of A”k until the feet and are called Nh”y A”k. (Light of the eyes of A”k is Chuchmah its ע “ב of A”k, but at the feet its Nh”y from chuchmah of A”k)16 A”k is one יהו “ ה , its brain י

DON’T YOU FEAR ME SAYS THE LORD-LOVE GOD

Devarim בס”ד

Near the beginning of our parsha We are reminded of the generation that all died in the desert because of the affair of the spies as it’s written ”And you came near me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by which way we must go up, and to what cities we shall come.” But after the spies brought back the evil report our parsha tells us concerning the people. “And you murmured in your tents, and said, Because the Lord hated us, he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites. Where shall we go? our brothers have discouraged our heart”. For this sin of fearing the nations and not believing in GOD the whole generation was forbidden to enter the land, and as it says in Bamidbar “Your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were counted of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, all of you shall not come into the land, concerning which I swore to make you live in it, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun”. We should have learned this lesson by now.

Fear only GOD.

The beginning of the mitzvah of fearing GOD is to know that ”Elokenu” is the ד“ו parzufim (masculine and feminine aspects of GOD). These are the Written and Oral Torah by whose ruling we were taken out of Egypt.1 Fear embraces humility and humility embraces “chasidut” (piety). So by fear of sin one gets all these qualities.2 All the time one is only occupied only in the simple meaning of the Torah they see themselves as poor and dead. The main part of the Torah is its secrets. One who has the fear of GOD without Chuchmah (Kabbalah) will not reach the ”midot” (attributes) of ”chassidut” (piety). Fear of GOD is Chuchmah, turning away from evil is Bina.3

If a man gives his heart and dat to the fear of GOD, behold the letters of יהו”ה cleave in his heart. One who merits this has no lack. But if his heart lacks fear of GOD, the letters of יהו”ה are far from him. This is the greatest possible lack. This is what it means “Make Me a migdosh (temple), and I will dwell in them”. One sanctifies their heart so as to have dwell in it יהו”ה 4 The level of soul called ”Chayah” does not go out to a man except by receiving chuchmah. One who merits Chuchmah and dat their goes to him the fear of GOD.5 Growing in fear and ”Kidusha” as is proper this causes ”zivug” of Zu”n, and Abba with Imma to become complete as is proper. Through this is complete purification to man.6 When chuchmah is united to bina, the fear and awe of GOD can arise from the level of keter. Bina is called love but from chuchmah is complete love.7

Last weeks parsha said “But if you will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those whom you allow to remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall harass you in the land where you live. Moreover it shall come to pass, that I shall do to you, as I thought to do to them.”

So it is about time we stop this foolishness such as releasing terrorists as good will gestures. What could be a worse desecration of graves of Jewish martyrs who died in the Arab terrorist attacks than releasing terrorists as “good will gestures”? What could be a worse slap in the face of their grieving friends and relatives? The government spits upon the thousands of murdered and maimed Jewish women, children, civilians in order to stage a ”peace process show”

American President Obama throughout his term has wanted to force Isreal to give their land settled cities to their enemies who wish to send rockets upon central Israel and kill all the Jews. We must stop this government’s evil cowardly retreat from Yuhuda and Shamron. The disengagement from Gaza and the destruction of the Gush Katif Jewish settlements has created a pure terrorist state at Israel’s border. How many more such enclaves do we need ? The Israeli establishment plans to demolish more Jewish settlements and evict more Jews from their homes before transferring the territories to Arab rule. International law doesn’t justify such moves. Forced population transfer is a war crime. Forcible transfer is a form of ethnic cleansing. The International Criminal Tribunal convicted Yugoslavian officials for exactly the crime Israelis committed in Gush Katif. Instead lets get rid of the terrorists not nurture them. It by no means is our responsibility to provide the Palestinians with water, electricity and humanitarian aid. But it is the primary responsibility of the government to protect it citizens. So we must as it says in the verse “drive out the inhabitants of the land”, we must deal with the terrorists as enemies as is proper. Not with ”good will gestures”, and only receiving evil in return. Remember as it says in our parsha ”GOD Elohecha gives you this land as inheritance”. Then we can come to see the fullness of our inheritance with the Bait HaMikdash built and our righteous Mashiach (Messiah) quickly in our days.
Amen !

The Vilna Gaon teaches that the last ten Parsah of the Torah hint to what will happen during the last one thousand years of history. The Vilna Gaon explains that the spiritual root of the ten Torah portions of Devarim is in the ten Sefirot of the world of Asiyah. The history of the last ten centuries can be viewed according to understanding of ten Sefirot that direct Hanhaga (God’s providence) over the universe, in its corresponding century.Keser – Crown, Chochma – Wisdom, Bina – Understanding, Chesed – Kindness, Gevurah – Strength, Tiferes – Harmony, Netzach – Perseverance, Hod – Splendor, Yesod – Foundation, Malchus – Royalty. The projections of these Sefiros are in everything including the human body. Even though some knowledge of Kabala will enhance the understanding of this booklet, such knowledge is not required. One can learn a lot from this article even without it.

Let us study the history starting with year 5000, i.e. 1240 by secular calendar. According to the Gaon’s arrangement we have the following correspondence:

Parsha Sefira  Jewish year  Secular year

Devarim  Keter 5000    1240-1340

Vaeschanan Chochma  5100-5200  1340-1440

Ekev Bina 5200-5300   1440-1540

Reay Chesed   5300-5400  1540-1640

Shoftim Gevurah 5400-5500 1640-1740

Ki Setze Tiferes   5500-5600   1740-1840

Ki Savo Netzach     5600-5700 1840-1940

Nitzavim-Vayelech Hod    5700-5800 1940-2040

Haazinu Yesod             5800-5900 2040-2140

VeZot HaBrachah Malchus    5900-6000 2140-2240

Nitzavim and Vayelech are considered one Parsha thus, there are 53 Parsha in the Torah, like the gematria of the word “Gan” – garden. If we were to consider Nitzavim and Vayelech separately, we have a total of 54 Parsha.

Parsha Nitzavim and Vayelech.

Terrible curses continue being described in the beginning of this Parsha. Such expressions as “Sulfur and salt burned all the soil … like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah …” may well be hinting also to the devastation caused by the continuation of World War II.

After the terrible curses are described, the Torah predicts our return to Hashem and renewal of the observance of commandments. This passage is speaking to our generation. In the previous generations some people left traditional Judaism, and their descendants continued the downhill slide and assimilated even further. The concept of return to Torah observance was virtually unknown. In our day this is quite common. People who were born into families with completely irreligious backgrounds come back to Halachic Judaism and they often succeed in bringing their parents along with them.
