UPDATED APRIL 28 2015

Rabbi Acha was walking with Rabbi Yehuda on the way. As they were walking, Rabbi Yehuda said it is written, “The virgin of Isreal is fallen; she shall no more rise” (Amos 5:2). I came to Rabbi Shimon with a darkened face. He said to me, from the look on your face what is in your heart is seen. I said to him, indeed my mouth and heart speak the same. He said to me, speak up. I said to him, it is written, “The virgin of Isreal is fallen; she shall no more rise.” So if a man who is angry with his wife and she goes away, she will never go back to him. If so, woe to the children who are exiled with her. He said to me, is what the friends said about this not sufficient to you? I said, I have heard what they say, and it is graceful. But my mind is not yet clear about it.

He said to me, woe to the generation where there are no shepherds, and the flock wanders and goes without knowing whither, neither right nor left. Assuredly this verse needs to be familiar, and everything is revealed to those who look through the way of the Torah in a true way. Come and see: For all the exiles of Isreal, He set a time and limit to them all.

God set a limit to the time period of all the exiles of the Jews, except the last. Concerning the first exile of the Hebrews. The Egyptian exile had been foretold to Abraham at the famous Covenant Between the Pieces (Genesis 15:13). “And God said to Avram: You must surely know that your offspring will sojourn in a foreign land; they will enslave them and hurt them for four-hundred years.” Ultimately, the Egyptians went “above and beyond the call of duty” in their fulfilment of “they will enslave and hurt them.” – “They embittered their lives with strenuous work (Shemos/Exodus 1:14). In the end, the Jews were in Egypt for only 210 years. It was the intensity of their subjugation that facilitated their premature emancipation.

Jeremiah prophesied the 70-year exile of Babylon, the first temple exile. (Jeremiah 25:1)

In them all, they turned to the Holy One, blessed be He, and the virgin of Isreal, returned to her place in the time decreed. On the last exile, it is not so, for she will not return as in the times of the other exiles. This verse teaches this, for it is written, “The virgin of Isreal is fallen; she shall no more rise” and not written, ‘is fallen; I shall no more raise her’.

There is an allegory of a king who was angry with the queen and cast her away from her palace for a certain time. At the appointed time, the queen immediately returned and came before the king. It happened so once, twice, thrice. On the last time, she went far away from the king’s palace and the king cast her from his palace for a long time. The king said, This time is different than other times. She will not come to me but I shall go together with all the retinue of my palace and seek her.

When he reached her, he saw her lying in the dust. Who has ever seen the glory of the queen at that time and the entreaties of the king before her? Eventually the king held her in his hands, raised her and brought her to his palace and swore to her that he would never separate from her again, nor stay away from her.

The Holy One, blessed be He, will do likewise. Whenever the Community of Isreal was in exile, when the time came, she returned and came before the King. But in this exile, the Holy One, blessed be He, Himself will hold her hands, raise her, reconcile Himself to her and bring her to His palace. Come and see: It is indeed so as written, “The virgin of Isreal is fallen; she shall no more rise” BY HERSELF. Therefore, it is written, “On that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen” (Amos 9:11). She will no more rise as in other times, but I shall raise her, SHE WILL NOT RISE OF HERSELF. This is why it is written, “On that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen.” I will raise up the tabernacle of David. What is the tabernacle of David? It is the virgin of Isreal “that is fallen,” as in the words: “is fallen.” It is to the glory of the virgin of Isreal and to her praise THAT SHE WILL NO MORE RISE OF HERSELF, BUT THE HOLY ONE, BLESSED BE HE, WILL RAISE HER. I have learned this at that time.

Rabbi Yehuda said, Surely you have persuaded me and it agrees with me. This is the explanation of this matter. This agrees with another explanation, which I have heard but forgotten, but now I have regained it. We learned what Rabbi Yosi said that the Holy One, blessed be He, will proclaim about the Community of Isreal saying, “Shake yourself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem” (Isaiah 52:2); namely, like one holding his friend’s hand, saying, Shake yourself and rise. So will the Holy One, blessed be He, hold her and say, Shake yourself, arise.

Rabbi Acha said to him: All the retinue of the King’s palace started also TO SPEAK TO HER in this language: “Arise, shine; for your light is come” (Isaiah 60:1), for the King is here. Surely then, when the King makes peace with her, it is her glory and the joy of everyone. On every occasion, she came before the King and rose before Him, as written, “And she came into the king’s presence, and stood before the king” (I Kings 1:28). This time it is not so, but the King will come to her and placate her and return her to His palace. Hence, it is written, “Behold, your king comes to you” (Zecharyah 9:9) and not you to him. He “comes to you” to pacify you and to raise you. He comes to you to perfect you in everything and He comes to you to raise you to His palace and join you in a CONSTANT everlasting union, as written, “And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness” (Hosea 2:22).

This is referring to the ultimate redemption.

Exile is like widowhood, as in exile the Divine Presence must exist without her Husband (God). The Shechinah, descends into the lower worlds in order to sustain them.

If the Shechinah ” the Jewish people”— were not be in exile— they would be found unworthy of union with the God in the Holy land and they would have to die as did their brethren when 2 Temples stood. Therefore, God preferred that the Shechinah remain in exile. Rather than many dying.

Concerning exile Babylonia corresponds to the head, as it is written: “ are the head of gold.” Media and Persia correspond to the two arms, Greece corresponds to the body, and Edom and Ishmael correspond to the two legs. This is why the latter two exiles are long. The final stages of the exile as “ heels of the Messiah,” at that time it will be necessary to elevate the Divine sparks that have fell to the lowest places called, the the feet.

In every generation a spark of the Messiah comes into the world. If the generation is worthy he is revealed as the Messiah. If not, he dies or is killed as a martyr, as happened to Rabbi Akiva in the time of Ben Koziva, and in many other cases we do not even know about.

The good to Come

Filed under: Gog, Leviyaton, messiah redemption, Mount Zion, succah

Now we will look at what is to come in the future according to the vision given to us from the Creator by our beloved prophets. From this we will see the great good which our Beloved Creator wishes to bestow on the world, and on the nation of Israel in particular physically and spiritually. Then we will look at what the prophets have given to us as instruction for these later days to merit these blessings. I ask you my beloved friend to take to heart these teachings and act upon them immediately. Sharing them with those who have an ear to hear, as the hour is late. Now let us proceed with ” GREAT DAYS “, explanation and description of the Messianic revelation, these being words of consolation and comfort telling us of the time to come, the reward for the righteous. It is out of such great kindness that the largest parts of the writings of the Prophets are filled with messianic imagery,” Blessed is his Holy name because his kindness endures forever”. Now we shall look at Israel inheriting the land, the miracles, signs and wonders and the revelation of The Messiah in the messianic era.

The Prophet Isaiah states:

” For YHVH will have mercy on Jacob and will in addition choose Israel and will set them in their own land and the stranger shall be joined to them and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob ”     (14:1)

Rashi says concerning the phrase ” and will choose in addition Israel ” This refers to the time in the future when Hashem shall redeem Israel in a complete redemption. Metsudat David adds that Israel’s deliverance from the oppression of Bavel will seem a small thing compared to the redemption in the days of Messiah. As this will be a redemption off all Israel in a complete redemption, and also to everything that rests upon the earth. At this time converts will be added to Israel.

The personal providence of Hashem’s redemption of the Hebrew people from their troubles is described in the words of the prophet Malachi:

” For they who feared YHVH  spoke with one another and hearkened and heard it and a book of remembrance was written before him for those who feared YHVH and took heed of his name, and they shall be mine says YHVH. On that day I appoint as my particular day. I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him “.  (3:16-18)

Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra comments “Those who fear Hashem” are the Tsadekem, “they who heed his name” are the wise of heart that know the secret of the glorious and awesome name. In Perke de Rebbe Eleazer, Rabban Gamliel teaches the Heavens and earth are destined to pass away, as it is written ” And the Hosts of Heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll”. All the inhabitants shall taste the taste of death for two days. On the third day he shall renew them all and revive the dead. There shall be no more evil or plague. Now lets look at the detail that can be known with the help of Hashem. We get more of an overview of the wondrous protection Hashem affords Israel from the words of Isaiah:

”  In that day shall the plant of YHVH shall be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land shall be excellent and beautiful for those that remain of Israel. And it will come to pass that he that remains in Zion and He that remains in Jerusalem shall be called Holy, everyone in Jerusalem that is written to life. For YHVH will create upon every dwelling place of Mount Zion and upon her assemblies a cloud and smoke by day, and the shinning of a flaming fire by night. There shall be a marriage canopy and there shall be a Tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat and for a place of refuge and cover from the storm and from the rain ” (4:2-6)

The Radak explains that ” The plant ” this is Messiach. Rashi explains the fruit of the land are those Tsadekem who are the fruit of the Tree Of Life. The Radak says with the arrival of Messiach man will rejoice in the creation. Then Messiach will be victorious in the war against Gog. Then there will be Peace and quiet in the earth, and the world will be in awe. After this his genius and beauty will be revealed on the nations. Rashi says the  Chuppah (Marriage canopy) on the people will be the Shechinah. The Radak explains first there will be a cloud of glory of mercy in  Miscanot (Tabernacles), and in the Holy Temple. The Zohar says the Temple will be built before the exiles are gathered. So that the Shechinah first returns to the “mikdosh.” But if we are then only returning from exile the cloud of glory will be seen on the wise, great and Chassidim. In the day will be a cloud and burning and at night a glowing consuming fire, like there was with the tabernacle in the desert. The Vilna Goan explains that the smoke and glowing consuming fire is like at Mount Sinai during the giving of the Torah. The cloud prevents one from looking on the glory of Hashem as none can look and live. The Succah (tabernacle) will be shade by day to protect from the burning heat of the sun and from the sword. The Scoch (Roof of the Succah) will be the cloud of glory. Explaining further we turn to the Gomorra in Tractate Bava Metzia1 where Rabba says in the name of Rabbi Yochanan That the Holy one in the future will make a Succah for the righteous to protect from the sun, and it will be made of the skin of the Leviathan. If a man will be worthy a succah will be made for him, if not a mere covering, if He is not worthy of this a necklace will be made for him, if he doesn’t merit this a Amulet will be made for him. The rest of the Leviathan will be spread out over the hills of Jerusalem by the Holy One, and its splendor will shine from one end of the world to the other as it is written ” The nations shall rise in your light and kings in the brightness of your rising “

Also concerning the Leviathan Rabba said in the name of rabbi Yochanan The Holy one in the future will make a feast of the flesh of the Leviathan. Rav Dimi said in the name of Rabbi Yochanan the angel Gavreal will in the future hunt the leviathan, and if the Holy One does not help him, he will not be able to prevail over him.

When Yosef is with Yuhuda is Mashiach

Vayagash                                          Bs”d

In the beginning of our parsha when Yosef tells his brothers that Benyamin must stay because the chalice was found in his bag. Yuhuda makes the tikun (fixing) for his past behaviour of abandoning his brother and selling him as a slave, by volunteering his own life as he says “ Let me remain as a slave, but let the lad go ”. Thus he does the opposite of the transgression he made against Yosef which caused such grief to his father Yisrael. As with Yosef who he sold into slavery, here he offers himself as a slave. Yuhuda does the opposite of the transgression making a complete tikun. After this Yosef reveals himself.

On the simple level we see the tikun of the elder brother Yuhuda, as he being the leader of the brothers he should have stopped the evil from being perpetrated, so he needs to make the tikun . But what deeper implications are seen by this sequence of events. We know the 12 sons of Yisrael the fathers of the 12 tribes correspond and are conduits of the 12 mazzolot (constellations). Each being a aspect of the Shechinah. We know of Yuhuda that from his tribe came David haMelech, and will come Masiach. The tribe of Yuhuda is a conduit of  the sefira Malchut (the Divine presence and rulership of Hashem). Yosef is known as “Yosef ha sadeek”, a sadeek (righteous man) is a conduit of the sefira Yesod (gate way of divine energy that creates Divine providence). In the beginning of the parsha Yosef ha sadeek was not known to his brothers, they did not recognise him. This is similar to what goes on today in “secular” Isreal. The Sadeekem who Yosef represents are not recognised for the value of the work they do, their contribution to society by the “secular” Jews of the world or the Government in control of the State of Israel. It is in the merit of their work that we are able to live. It is necessary for Yuhuda, Malchut (the government) to make its tikun.  secular Jews must make their tikun for throwing Yosef, sedek (righteousness) in the pit and selling it into slavery. This is reminiscent of the words of the Prophet Amos “ So says YHVH  for three transgressions of Yisrael or four, I will not return them. For selling a righteous man for money” (2:6). Meaning that the Jewish people need to raise the value of the service of Hashem in their own eyes, and the value of those among them who dedicate their life to this work. They must give the talmid chuchmim (Holy Scholars) the respect due to them. Know we are commanded to stand up when a talmid chuchmim enters a room as before a Torah scroll itself. This says a lot. Its necessary For the Jewish people to recognise the greatness of their true Torah Leaders and their disciples, and help them with their needs when they can. Its written that a Rabbi who prevents a student from doing an act of kindness to him, is withholding from his student the good of heaven. When we realise how great a service those who learn Torah  are providing for us, as it is written in the midrash “ if it were not for the sages who sit and learn torah the world long ago would have been destroyed”. Thus it is a travesty that those who learn Torah in collels are some of the lowest paid workers. It is truly in the merit of those who learn and observe the Torah that the Jewish people have it so good, and have not been destroyed. In earlier generations all the Levi and Coheniam dedicated their lives to the Service of Hashem and most of the Jewish people learned some level of Torah. Now all is resting on the shoulders the few who occupy in Torah, so give them their due.

Thus we see that Yuhuda-Machut (the government) does its tikun by recognising the value of its righteous inhabitants. By doing this they recognise Hashem. Then Yosef will be revealed this being the true value of righteousness, what the sadeekem represent. Thus recognising the Greatness of Hashem and His Torah. Then will Manifest the Power of Mashiach ben Yosef and the Mashiach of the House of David with the Temple built quickly in our days.

And may it be that we see this Greatness very soon in a complete redemption.

The Future-The Temple
November 25, 2008, 9:15 am
Filed under: messiah redemption, The Temple

The inner sanctum at the first and second temples were built with windows high on the walls of the room. The apertures of the windows will small one the outside and larger on the inside.

When the builders asked “why” of God and their guiding prophets, they were told that normal windows are placed to let the light of the world into the room they are built in.

However the special and highly unique windows in the inner sanctum of the temple were built for another purpose entirely. That purpose was to let the light of God and the Light of Israel out into the world.

This world is a place of spiritual darkness. The light of the God is hidden. Even if the God is infinite people are unaware of its existence, and this is a wounderous thing. We do not see it because we’ve been born into such a time and for generations passing the temple and it’s sacrifices have not existed on the planet. By them the Light of the God became more revealed.

Once it is reestablished and the sacrifices begin again. Concerning this its written The work of the Holy Temple will continue once again as we see from the Prophet  Jeremiah:

” Behold the days are coming says YHVH I will perform the good thing which I promised to the house of Israel, and to the house of Yehudah. In those days at that time, I will cause an offshoot of righteousness to grow up for David and He shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days shall Yehudah be saved and Jerusalem shall dwell safely and this is the name whereby she shall be called YHVH  is our righteousness. Thus says YHVH David shall never lack a man sitting on the thrown of the house of Israel. Neither shall the Cohen and Levites lack a man before me to offer Burnt offerings and to burn Meal offerings and to do sacrifice for all days “(33:14-18)

The Radak explains “offshoot of righteousness” this refers to Messiah. The Metsudat David says we will call the place of Jerusalem when this prophesy is fulfilled YHV”H is our righteousness. This depicts a little how dramatic this time will be to Jerusalem. The Metsudat David teaches us from the words ” do sacrifice for all days” that there will not be cut off the sacrifice because there shall forever be this service. God will return the Cohaniam (priests) and all their aspects as described in the Torah into action again as in days of old.1 In the Zohar it states in the future the Holy name will be established perfectly united and sacrifices shall be offered to the complete name of אלהי”ם יהו”ה , which was not before as אלהי”ם had no part of the sacrifices becouse the other side would then take part in the offerings.2 The Prophet Ezekiel also speaks of this time concerning the descendants of Aaron, the priests saying :

” They shall teach my people the difference between the Holy and profane, between the unclean and clean so they will know, in controversy they will give judgement, they shall judge according to my judgements, and shall keep my laws and statutes in all my festivals, and they shall keep my Sabbaths Holy. They shall eat the meal offering, the sin offering, the trespass offering, and every dedicated thing in Israel shall be Theirs ” (44:23-29)

From here we see all the laws of the Torah will once again be upheld.

The light of God, the spirit and the blessings we cannot imagine will then once again illuminate a darkened world. A world left in darkness for over 2000 years while we await and pray for the blessings of the Temple and the undreamed of benefits and blessings that it will bring into the world. The light of God who dwells there with his people will once again shine forth through those high and unique windows and bring God’s on light into a darkened world.

We cannot dream what the impact of this light shining forth again must be. We have no practical experience with such things. Yes, someday soon – within our life times if it be the will of God – this light from God will once again go forth and bless the world. Not just Israel but the entire world. What will it do? What will it allow? What will it encourage and what will it prevent? No one knows. But it is a great blessing unto the entire world. That much we know from scripture. But the form and type of blessings it will bestow – pray for it. It’s worth praying for and pray you may be allowed to see it in your time. That temple being rebuilt may be the haven and the link to God that prevents mankind from the utter destruction of the earth that otherwise would happen were mankind left entirely to his own nature.

Pray for the Holy Temple to be rebuilt here – and SOON! If it be the Will of God!

THEN WILL BE THE BIGGEST PARTY !

Good times are coming with Temple Service

Filed under: aretz israel, Great Days, messiah redemption, The Temple

Specific detail concerning the nature of the revelation of the Messiah and his actions are found in the words of the Prophet Isaiah:

” There shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Yashi, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of YHVH shall rest upon him ,and the spirit of Wisdom and understanding, the spirit of council and might, the spirit of knowledge and fear of YHVH. His delight shall be in the fear of YHVH. He shall not judge by the sight of his eyes or the hearing of his ears. With righteousness shall he judge the poor and decide with equity concerning the meek of the earth. He shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth. With the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked ” (11:1-4)

Rashi explains that Hashem shall perform a great miracle suddenly for Israel in the days of Messiah which will result in gathering in of the exiles. This sudden wonder is as a sprout suddenly shooting forth that was previously unseen by all. The Radak explains that Messiah by the rod of his mouth will change things from the way they are now. The poor will be remembered and raised up to the wise. The Vilna Goan tells us the poor of the earth are the Tsadekem (RIGHTEOUS), eventually they will be raised to the great Tsadekem like Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, and the wicked will die. The righteous will be strengthened. The wicked cursed with their lips and breath so is their lot. while the righteous receive the harvest of their righteousness. Not only will we be blessed with the arrival of Messiah who will bring redemption but He will have helpers as we see in the words of the Prophet Obadiah :

” Deliverers will ascend to Mount Zion to Judge mount Asev and the kingdom will belong to YHVH  ” (1:21)

The Radak tells us the word deliverers plural refers to Messiah, and his friends the seven shepherds and eight princes of men. Metsudat David explains at this time Edom shall be judged on the evil they have done to Israel. And their work shall be awesome as Zechariah describes:

” Therefore says YHVH  I have returned to Jerusalem with mercies. My house shall be rebuilt in it thus says YHVH TSVAOT and a line shall be stretched forth over Jerusalem. Proclaim further saying thus says YHVH TSVAOT My cities shall again overflow with property, and YHVH shall yet comfort Zion and shall choose Jerusalem ” (1:16-17)

Metsudat David explains this redemption shall be one of wondrous mercy because of the evil perpetrated against Israel. It is not because of their merit. Hashem will be great comfort to Israel in the complete redemption. The work of the measuring rod described in the Prophet Zechariah is explicitly depicted in the words of the Prophet Jeremiah:

” Behold the days are coming says YHVH, when the city shall be built to YHVH from the Tower of Channial to the Gate of Pinna, and the measuring line shall go straight to Garave Hill and around to Goata and all the valley of dead bodies and the ashes and all the fields as far as the Wadi of Kidron till the corner of Horse gate. Towards the east shall be Holy to YHVH and it shall not be plucked up or thrown down anymore forever ” (31:37-39)

The Radak says Pinna Gate is the Gate of Panim in the Prophet  Zechariah. The tower of Channial is at Fish Gate as referred to by the prophet Zephaniah. The valley of dead bodies Metsudat Zion says this refers those killed in the siege of Jerusalem. This being the place of dwelling of the Arabs. The work of the Holy Temple will continue once again as we see from the Prophet  Jeremiah:

Hashem will return the Cohaniam and all their aspects as described in the Torah into action again as in days of old.1 In the Zohar it states in the future the Holy name will be established perfectly united and sacrifices shall be offered to the complete name of  יהו”ה אלהי”ם , which was not before as אלהי”ם had no part of the sacrifices becouse the other side would then take part in the offerings.2 The Prophet Ezekiel also speaks of this time concerning the descendants of Aaron, the priests saying :

” They shall teach my people the difference between the Holy and profane, between the unclean and clean so they will know, in controversy they will give judgement, they shall judge according to my judgements, and shall keep my laws and statutes in all my festivals, and they shall keep my Sabbaths Holy. They shall eat the meal offering, the sin offering, the trespass offering, and every dedicated thing in Israel shall be Theirs ” (44:23-29)

” For the day of  YHVH  shall be upon every one that is  proud and lofty, and every one that is lifted up shall be brought low ” (2:12)

The Radak explains in the ” day of Hashem ” all will recognize his kingship, by this the arrogant will be brought low. Now that we have looked externally at what will happen. Now we shall look at what will happen internally, spiritually to the Hebrew people, the nations around us and the world itself according to the prophesy of Jeremiah:

” Behold I will gather them out of all the countries I have scattered them in my anger, and in my fury and in great wrath. I will bring them back to this place. I will cause them to dwell safely. They will be my people and I will be their God. I will give them one heart and one way. That they may fear me forever for their good, and that of their children after them. I will make an everlasting covenant with them. I will not turn away from doing good to them, but I will put my fear in their hearts and they shall not turn aside from me. I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will truly plant them in this land with my whole heart and my whole soul. Thus says YHVH   just as I have brought all this great evil on this people. So will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them ” (32:37-43)

Rashi says we will be gathered together in mercy from all places. The Metsudat David explains Israel will be as one heart, meaning there will be no more doubt, and they will not ignore any of my words to desecrate them, but all as one will go in the way of the fear of Hashem for all days forever more. Now we have looked at how Jeremiah describes the changes that take place in the heart’s of Hashem’s children Israel. Now we shall look for further clarification in this matter from the Prophet Ezekiel:

” For I will gather you from all the nations and take you from all the countries, and bring you into your own land. Then I will sprinkle clean water on you and you shall be clean from all of your uncleanness, and from your idols I will cleanse you. A new heart I will give you. A new spirit I will put in you, I will take the stony heart out of your flesh. I will give you a heart of flesh. I will put my spirit within you and cause you to follow my statutes and keep my judgments to do them. You will dwell in the land I gave to your fathers. You will be my people and I will be your God. I will save you from your uncleanness. I will call the corn and make it abundant. You will no more receive the reproach of famine among the nations ” (36:24-30)

The Radak explains ” I will sprinkle purifying water on you and you shall be clean “, Just as those who are impure become pure by immersing in the pure water of a Mikvah, so too those who sin and are impure from iniquity will be purified in atonement. Explaining ” I will put a new heart and new spirit within you ” the Radak says that there shall be to them a heart that hears and a  Ruach (spirit) that is true to receive the words of the blessed one in love. The heart and spirit will be in awe. The Metsudat David say Hashem’s name will be sanctified when he takes us from the nations. Concerning the “purifying water” we learn we will receive atonement from our iniquities, and there will pass away the impurity of our sin in the sprinkling of the ashes of the red heifer, purifying us from the impurity of death. The aspect of “new heart” is described by the Metsudat David as upright and driven to fulfill a will that is good. From the “new spirit” there will return prophecy, which has been missing all the days of exile. With the renewal of prophecy is the coming of the forbearer of the Messiah as described in the words of the Prophet Malachi:

” Behold I will send My messenger and He shall clear the way before me, and ADON  who you seek shall suddenly come into his temple, and the messenger of the covenant whom you delight in. Behold He shall come says YHVH TSVAOT. Who shall abide the day of his coming. Who shall stand when he appears. For He is like the refiners fire, like the washers soap. He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and shall purify the son’s of Levi, and purge them as Silver and Gold that they may offer to YHVH an offering in righteousness. Then shall the offerings of Yehudah and Jerusalem be pleasant to YHVH as in days of old and former years ” (3:1-4). The Prophet Malachi also states:

”  Behold I will send you Eliyahu HaNavi before the coming of the great and dreadful day of YHVH and He shall turn the heart of children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the land with a curse ” (3:23)

The sages identify the messenger of the covenant as Eliyahu the Prophet. The Radak tells us that Eliyahu will judge separating those who have merit from those that are wicked. The Metsudat David says like in days of old  a fire will come down from heaven to consume the sacrifice on the alter. In Perke R. Yashiyha it states that when Mashiach and Eliyahu first reveal themselves they will not be believed. They will be asked to perform miracles to prove they are who they say. Mashiach will perform  miracles. First he will bring to Yisrael Moshe and the generation of the desert. 2nd he will raise up Korach. 3rd He will resurrect Nachemyah ben Chusial (He is Mashiach ben Yosef Who was killed at the gates of Yerushalym). 4th He will reveal the ark, mana and annointing oil that was hidden. 5th all the mountains of Yisrael will sprout wheat. He will reveal secrets of the Torah. Then the hearts of fathers will turn to their sons.1
