In the Beginning of the Sadar of Passach the middle matzah is split in 2 pieces and the larger of the 2 is then hid, for the children to search for much later in the night.
There are some strange things about the Afikoman, It is not just a game to keep the child awake.
Like ransoming it from the children.
He who finds the afikomen, can hold out for any price.
There is the mystery of the yahatz act. Every other mitzvah in the the sader has with it a blessing as over the wine, the washing of the hands, the parsley, the matzah, the bitter herbs mixed with haroset. But there was no Blessing said over the yahatz.
There is not even an explanation like the one given before eating the Hillel sandwich..
There is a oddity saying “Ha motzi” over a broken piece of Matzah.
Why is the middle matzah and not the other two were broken, and why it was broken into two uneven parts with the larger part saved for the afikomen.
In the order of the Seder “yahatz”, the division of the middle matzah,——takes place early, before the great declaration, “This is the bread of affliction.”
The Afikoman must be eaten before midnight.
After the afikomen no food or drink can be consumed except for the final two cups of wine.
The ritual of eating the afikomen iscalled tzafon, which means “hidden.”
It is eaten in silence, without blessing said.
The silence of the breaking of the middle matzah and with the the eating of the afikomen suggests that something secret is involved in this part of the seder.
The idea of a Messianic era was considered a threat to the Romans for whom there was no messiah but the Emperor, no redeemer but Rome. To speak of the Messiah at a sader would be seen as a act of sedition. This had to be dressed in hiddeness. In silence, without a blessing is the Afikomen eaten—also one does not bless that which has not yet occurred. Eating the Afikomen. is a way of affirming belief in the Passover of the Future, the coming of the Messiah and Redemption.
The hidden matzah is the greater part. In the future God will do for us and show us things, greater things than that of the past.. The Afikomen relates to the vision of Messianic times toward which we live and strive for.
This interesting Paragraph in the beginning of the hagada alludes to this, here three time dimensions are in this one paragraph :
“This is the bread of affliction that our ancestors ate in the land of Egypt.
All who are hungry, let them come in an eat; all who are in need come in and celebrate the Passover., Now we are here, next year in Israel. Now we are slaves, next year free people“
Opening the door for Elijah is for more than amusement.
Please God we will soon see its fulfillment !
